Professional Custom Curtains

Custom hotel curtains: soundproof, blackout, fire-retardant.

Why restaurants need technical blinds

75 to 85 dB during peak hours: this is the noise level measured in an active restaurant, the equivalent of a continuously running vacuum cleaner. But noise is not the only problem. Large windows, characteristic of city-center restaurants, are also the primary source of heat loss in winter and overheating in summer.

Acoustics. Conversations overlap, each guest speaks louder to be heard (Lombard effect), and the noise level spirals upwards. High-density technical curtains on the windows reduce external noise by up to 22 dB* and absorb some of the internal reverberation. For a detailed guide on acoustics in restaurants, consult our guide to acoustic curtains for restaurants.

Thermal Performance. Large bay windows transmit heat in summer (overheating of the room, excessive air conditioning use) and cold in winter (discomfort for tables near windows, heating costs). A technical curtain can provide up to a 7°C* gain between the window and the room, reducing the establishment's energy costs.

Light. Glare on a glassed-in patio, direct sunlight disturbing guests in the late afternoon: a blackout curtain controls the light according to service needs. Kurtens curtains can achieve 100% blackout*. Fire safety. Restaurant dining rooms larger than 50 m² are subject to a fire rating requirement for curtains (M2 minimum according to the decree of June 25, 1980, article AM 12 b). Kurtens offers M1 or M2 certification upon request.

Technical Performance: Kurtens vs Market

Fabric density directly determines a curtain's acoustic and thermal performance. Standard hospitality curtains (150 to 300 g/m²) only attenuate 5 to 7 dB, which is imperceptible to guests. Here are the performance levels observed in the professional market.

Category Density Atténuation phonique Heat gain Concealment
Standard curtain 150-300 gsm 5-7 dB 1-2°C 40-70%
Mid-range 300-500 gsm 12-18 dB 35-39°F 70-90%
Haute performance 500+ gsm 18-25 dB 5-7°C 95-100%
Kurtens (capacité de production) Jusqu'à 620 g/m² Up to 22 dB* Up to 7°C* Up to 100%*

*Data from tests under optimal conditions. In B2B, performance is adapted according to your specifications.

Fire safety standards and restaurant regulations

Restaurants are classified as ERP (Establishments Receiving Public). Curtains installed in common areas must comply with a minimum fire rating defined by the decree of June 25, 1980, articles AM 11 to AM 14, and standard NF P 92-507.

The obligations apply per space, regardless of the type of ERP:

  • Rooms over 50 m² and corridors: M2 minimum (AM 12 b). Almost all commercial restaurants are larger than 50 m² and are therefore subject to this requirement.
  • Enclosed staircases: M1 mandatory (AM 12 a).
  • Stages and platforms: M1 mandatory (AM 13).
  • Prohibition AM 11 §1: It is strictly forbidden to place curtains across corridors, passages, or emergency exits. A zone-separating curtain must never block an evacuation route.

Beyond legal requirements, insurers and control bodies (Bureau Veritas, Apave, Socotec) frequently recommend M1 classification in all areas, including those with no regulatory obligation. In practice, opting for M1 secures the establishment with all these stakeholders. For a detailed analysis of M1 and M2 standards, consult our page dedicated to fire-retardant curtains for public access buildings.

Kurtens offers M1 certification upon request, integrated directly into your project quote.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Restaurant Curtains.

What is the fire rating for restaurant curtains?

M2 minimum for rooms larger than 50 m² and circulation areas (Article AM 12 b of the decree of June 25, 1980). M1 mandatory in enclosed staircases (AM 12 a) and on stages or platforms (AM 13). M1 is recommended in all areas to secure the establishment against insurers and control offices. Kurtens provides M1 certification upon request.

Can curtains reduce noise in a restaurant without construction work?

Yes. A high-density technical curtain on the windows attenuates outside noise by up to 22 dB* and absorbs some of the internal reverberation, reducing the perceived sound level by 3 to 6 dB in the room. This is a solution that installs like a classic curtain, without work, without closure, and without disruption to service.

Do curtains block out heat on a glass-enclosed patio?

A technical curtain can provide a temperature difference of up to 7°C* between the window and the room. For restaurants with large bay windows or an enclosed terrace, it is an effective complement to air conditioning that reduces energy costs, especially in summer.

Can we customize the colors for a restaurant?

In B2B, Kurtens manufactures to specifications: materials, colors and finishes are defined according to your establishment's visual identity. Samples are available upon request for validation with your decorator or interior designer before production begins.

How to maintain curtains in a restaurant?

Curtains near the kitchen or serving area absorb cooking odors over time. Washing them every 2 to 3 months (30°C, delicate cycle) is sufficient to eliminate accumulated odors. The structural multi-layered curtain can withstand over 50 washes without loss of performance.

Can a curtain be used as a partition between two areas of the room?

Yes, a high-density curtain hung between two areas creates a visual and acoustic separation. It's a flexible solution that folds away when you need the entire space (large groups, events). Warning: the curtain must never block an exit or circulation (AM 11 §1 prohibition). It must be positioned between table areas, not across an evacuation route.

Is installation included?

Kurtens does not offer installation directly but can recommend qualified partner installers to ensure the setup in your establishment.
