Choosing the right curtain (buyer's guide)
How to choose between thermal, blackout and soundproof curtains?
It all depends on your main need. If you suffer from cold or heat, a thermal curtain reduces temperature differences by up to 7°C*. If light bothers you (bedroom, home cinema), a 100% blackout curtain* completely blocks light. If noise is the problem: busy street, neighbours, old apartment, a soundproof curtain attenuates up to –22dB*. The good news: our 3-layer curtain combines all three performances in a single product. You don't have to choose between thermal comfort, total darkness, and sound insulation.
*Data from tests performed under optimal testing conditions.
Which curtains should I choose for a bedroom?
For a bedroom, we recommend our curtain that combines 100% blackout* and thermal insulation. The total blackout guarantees quality sleep by blocking outside light from streetlights, car headlights, and sunrise. The thermal insulation maintains a comfortable temperature all year round, with up to a 7°C* difference between the window and the interior. If you are sensitive to noise, the version with a sound-absorbing layer (–22dB attenuation*) is ideal, especially in urban environments.
*Data from tests conducted under optimal testing conditions.
Can a single curtain truly be thermal, blackout, and soundproof all at the same time?
Yes. Our technical curtains are made of 3 distinct layers: a premium polyester fabric on the visible side, a central blackout membrane that blocks 100%* of light, and a sound and thermal padded backing. Each layer fulfills a specific function. The measured result: total blackout, sound attenuation of –22dB*, and a temperature difference of 7°C* between the window and the room.
*Data from tests performed under optimal testing conditions.
Heavy curtain or light curtain: which is more effective for insulation?
For thermal and sound insulation, a dense, heavy curtain is often more effective than a lightweight curtain. Fabric density and layer thickness are directly linked to sound attenuation and thermal barrier performance. Our technical curtains are designed with 3 dense layers, which explains their heavier weight compared to a classic decorative curtain. This weight is a guarantee of their effectiveness. Our curtains weigh 620g/m2.
How many curtains should be planned per window?
This depends on the width of your window and the desired effect. Our online configurator will guide you: enter your exact dimensions or choose a standard size and select between one or two panels depending on your installation. We recommend 2 curtain panels for optimal weight distribution on the curtain rod or your mounting system.
Thermal performance (winter/summer)
What temperature difference can a thermal curtain actually create?
Our thermal curtains create a measured difference of 7°C* between the glass surface and the interior of the room. In winter, they form a barrier against the cold that penetrates through windows. In summer, they reduce the heat from solar rays. This 7°C* difference concretely translates into improved comfort and a reduction in your heating or air conditioning consumption.
*Data obtained from tests conducted under optimal testing conditions.
Does a thermal curtain work as well in summer as in winter?
Yes, thermal curtains act as insulation year-round. In winter, the quilted thermal layer prevents the cold from penetrating. In summer, the blackout membrane blocks the sun's rays and radiant heat. The principle is the same as double glazing: creating an insulating layer of air between the window and the room. Closing your thermal curtains during the hottest hours of the day significantly reduces the rise in indoor temperature.
Can a thermal curtain replace double glazing?
A thermal curtain does not replace double glazing, but it effectively complements it and is essential if you still have single glazing. Where double glazing acts on the glass itself, the curtain creates an additional barrier in front of the window with a measured temperature difference of 7°C*. For tenants who cannot change their windows, this is a very effective and less expensive solution to improve insulation without any work.
Thermal curtains: what heating savings can be expected?
The exact savings depend on your home, the quality of your windows, and your heating system. What is measurable: our thermal curtains reduce heat loss through windows by creating a 7°C temperature difference*. Windows account for an average of 10 to 15% of heat loss in a home. By covering all your windows with thermal curtains, the impact on your energy bill can be significant, especially if your home has single glazing or old windows.
Does a thermal curtain also protect against UV rays?
Yes. Our 100% blackout membrane completely blocks UV rays in addition to visible light. This protects your furniture, floors, and fabrics from fading caused by prolonged sun exposure. This is an additional benefit of our technical curtains: thermal insulation, light blocking, and UV protection in one product.
*Data from tests performed under optimal testing conditions.
Acoustic performance (noise)
Is a soundproof curtain effective against street noise?
Yes, this is one of its primary uses. Street noise, traffic, horns, passing vehicles. With a –22 dB* attenuation, our soundproof curtains bring this noise level down to a comfortable zone. They are particularly effective in front of windows, which are the main entry point for outdoor noise into a home. For ground-floor apartments or those on busy streets, it's an immediate solution requiring no work.
*Data from tests performed under optimal testing conditions.
What is the difference between a soundproof curtain and an acoustic curtain?
Both terms refer to the same function: noise reduction. "Soundproof curtain" and "acoustic curtain" are used interchangeably. The nuance is technical: "acoustic" can refer to sound absorption within a room (reverberation reduction), while "soundproof" refers to the isolation of noise coming from outside. Our curtains do both: they attenuate outside noise and slightly reduce indoor resonance thanks to their dense quilted backing.
Can a soundproof curtain replace wall insulation?
No, a soundproof curtain is not a substitute for complete wall insulation. However, it addresses the number one weakness in a dwelling's insulation: the windows. Even with well-insulated walls, noise primarily passes through the glazing. A soundproof curtain placed in front of your windows is a quick, affordable, and effective solution to improve acoustic comfort without undertaking major renovation work.
Noise-reducing curtains for apartments: do they really work?
Yes, and it's even one of the contexts where our curtains are most effective. In apartments, noise pollution primarily comes from windows (street, courtyard, neighbors) and sometimes doors. Our acoustic curtains significantly reduce the perceived noise level. They can be installed without any work, without drilling into walls, and adapt to most windows thanks to custom manufacturing. For a tenant, it's a reversible sound insulation solution.
Privacy & Concealment
Do your blackout curtains really block 100% of the light?
Yes, our curtains offer 100% blackout*. The central membrane integrated into our 3 layers completely blocks light, including direct sunlight in mid-summer. No light penetrates the fabric. To ensure total blackout in practice, the curtain must fully cover the window.
*Data from tests performed under optimal testing conditions.
Can blackout curtains be used in a home cinema?
Absolutely. The 100% blackout* of our curtains makes them an ideal solution for a home cinema. By blocking all outside light, you get complete darkness even in broad daylight. The bonus: the soundproof layer also improves the room's acoustics by reducing reverberation and outside noise. You gain both image quality and sound comfort simultaneously.*Data from tests performed under optimal test conditions.
Does a blackout curtain also protect against the view of neighbors?
Yes, 100%* blackout means that light does not pass through, and neither does the gaze. For ground-floor apartments, those overlooking other buildings, or those facing a busy street, this guarantees privacy as soon as the curtain is closed.
*Data obtained from tests conducted under optimal testing conditions.
Blackout curtain or roller shutter: which to choose?
The two are complementary. The roller shutter protects the outside of the window. The blackout curtain works on the inside with additional benefits: thermal insulation, noise reduction, and interior aesthetics. If you already have shutters, the blackout curtain reinforces insulation. If you don't have shutters, which is common in apartments, the blackout curtain is a complete and easy-to-install solution.
Do your blackout curtains still let light through on the sides?
The fabric itself blocks light. However, some light may filter through the sides, top, or bottom of the curtain if it is not wide enough or long enough. This is why we always recommend an overlap beyond the window on each side. With our configurator, you enter the exact dimensions of your window, and we guide you on the margins to allow for perfect blackout in practice.
Custom-made: measurements taken
How do I measure my windows for a custom-made curtain?
When you choose the custom option, measure the width of the curtain rod or track (not the window), then the height from the hanging point to the floor or to the desired point. For fabric width, allow 1.5 to 2 times the width of your curtain rod for a beautiful drape effect and optimal performance. Our online configurator and illustrated guides will accompany you step by step. If in doubt, our customer service is available Monday to Saturday.
What is the maximum height that can be ordered for a custom-made curtain?
Our custom curtains are available up to 270 cm in height. This dimension covers the vast majority of homes, including Haussmannian apartments and rooms with above-average ceiling heights. For width, there is no minimum: we make to your exact dimensions. For projects larger than 2.7m, we invite you to contact us here.
What happens if I make a mistake in my measurements when I chose the custom option?
We offer the Exact-Fit guarantee, an option costing €29.90 available when ordering. If you make a mistake in your measurements, we will restart production of your curtain with the correct dimensions free of charge and deliver it to you again at no extra cost.
Do I need to measure the window or the curtain rod to order?
Always measure the curtain rod or track, not the window. The width of your hanging system determines the required fabric width. For the height, measure from the attachment point (ring, eyelet, or tape) to the floor or your desired end point, either with a clean drop 2-3 cm from the floor or a slightly curved drop for maximum insulation. Our online configurator guides you with clear diagrams for each type of finish (eyelets, gathering tape, rod pocket).
Can I order a custom-made curtain for a front door or a bay window?
Yes, our custom-made curtains adapt to all types of openings: classic windows, bay windows, entrance doors, French windows. No minimum dimensions are required, and we can make them up to 270 cm high. The soundproof curtain in front of an entrance door is one of the most effective solutions to reduce noise from the hallway or the street.
Manufacturing & finishing
What finishes are available for your curtains?
We offer four types of finishes: eyelets (modern look, smooth gliding on the rod), gathering tape (regular pleats, compatible with tracks and hook rods), rod pocket (the rod passes directly through a hem, clean look), and the multi-functional system (compatible with several installation methods). Each finish can be selected in our configurator when placing your order.
What colors are available?
Our range includes 7 colors designed to fit into any interior: blue, green, mint green, lilac, gray, off-white, and cream. These shades were selected for their decorative versatility.
How many layers are your technical curtains made of?
Our curtains are made of 3 distinct layers, each with a specific function. The visible side is a premium polyester fabric with a dense and refined feel. The intermediate layer is a blackout membrane that blocks 100%* of light. The back is a padded sound and thermal layer that provides acoustic insulation (–22dB*) and thermal insulation (7°C* difference). These 3 layers work together to create a triple-performance curtain.
*Data from tests performed under optimal testing conditions.
Is the quality of workmanship the same for all sizes?
Yes. Each curtain is made with the same materials and manufacturing process, regardless of the size ordered. A 120 cm wide curtain has the same 3 layers, the same fabric density, and the same finishes as a 250 cm curtain.
Compatibility with curtain rods, rails & installation
What types of curtain rods are compatible with your curtains?
All curtain rods are compatible with our curtains, as you can choose your preferred type of hanging system.
Can a soundproof curtain be installed on a ceiling track?
Yes, provided you choose the gathered heading tape or multi-functional trim, both of which are compatible with ceiling-mounted tracks. Make sure your track is securely fixed and can support the weight of a 3-layer technical curtain, which is heavier than a standard decorative curtain. If in doubt, opt for reinforced wall brackets or a high-quality aluminum track.
Do you also sell curtain rods or rails?
No, we focus exclusively on curtain making. You can find curtain rods and tracks in all major DIY and home decor stores. The important thing is to choose a system that's sturdy enough to support the weight of our 3-layer technical curtains. We recommend metal rods or aluminum tracks rather than plastic models.
Is a 3-layer curtain too heavy for a standard curtain rod?
Our technical curtains are denser and heavier than a standard decorative curtain at approximately 620g/m2, due to their 3 layers. Most metal curtain rods can perfectly support this weight. However, thin plastic rods or suction cup systems are not suitable. If you have any doubts about the strength of your installation, check the maximum load indicated by the manufacturer of your rod, or opt for a well-secured wall or ceiling track.
Is a special installation system required for a wide curtain?
For large widths (beyond 200 cm), we recommend an aluminum track fixed to the wall or ceiling rather than a curtain rod. The track offers better weight distribution and smoother gliding along the entire length. If you use a curtain rod, provide an intermediate support to prevent it from sagging in the center. We can advise you on the installation suitable for your configuration.

Maintenance & Durability
Can a thermal and acoustic curtain be machine washed?
Yes, our curtains are machine washable at low temperatures (maximum 30°C, delicate cycle). Use a mild detergent without bleach. To preserve the performance of the three layers over time, you can also opt for professional dry cleaning. Avoid high spin cycles and tumble drying.
What is the lifespan of a Kurtens technical curtain?
With proper care (washing at low temperatures, careful handling), our technical curtains are designed to last for many years without any loss of performance. The density of the polyester fabric and the robust construction guarantee long-lasting durability. The sound and thermal insulation layers retain their properties wash after wash, provided the care instructions are followed.
Does the soundproof padded backing lose its effectiveness over time?
No, not if you follow the care instructions. The wadding is structurally integrated into the curtain; it won't detach or compress significantly over time. However, washing too frequently at high temperatures or intensive spinning could affect its density. By following our recommendations, the soundproofing performance will remain stable over time.
Personalization & decorating tips
What colours are available for custom-made Kurtens curtains?
We offer seven colors: blue, green, mint green, lilac, gray, off-white, and cream. These shades have been selected to complement most contemporary, classic, or Scandinavian interiors. From versatile neutrals (gray, off-white, cream) to bold pops of color (lilac, mint green), each color is available in all sizes and finishes.
How to choose the color of your curtains according to your room?
For a bedroom, neutral tones (grey, off-white, cream) promote calm and sleep. For a living room, a green, blue or lilac curtain adds character without being overwhelming. For small rooms, light colours (cream, off-white, mint green) visually enlarge the space.
Can a technical curtain be as aesthetically pleasing as a decorative curtain?
Yes. The visible side of our curtains is a premium fabric with a luxurious feel, available in 7 colors. Visually, nothing distinguishes a Kurtens curtain from a high-end decorative curtain. The difference is invisible but real: behind the fabric, the two technical layers (blackout membrane + sound/thermal insulation backing) ensure performance. Aesthetic on the front, technical on the back.
Can you mix colors in the same room?
Yes, that is entirely possible. Some clients choose a neutral color (grey, off-white) for the main windows and a more striking shade (blue, lilac) to create a focal point. The tones in our range are designed to work together.
