Choosing the right curtain (buying guide)
How do I choose between a thermal, blackout and soundproof curtain?
It all comes down to your main need. If you suffer from cold or heat, a thermal curtain reduces temperature gaps by up to 7°C*. If light bothers you (bedroom, home cinema), a 100%* blackout curtain blocks light completely. If noise is the problem: busy street, neighbours, older flat, a soundproof curtain cuts up to -22 dB*. The good news: our 3-in-1 curtain combines all three in a single product. You don't have to choose between thermal comfort, total darkness and acoustic insulation.

Which curtain should I choose for a bedroom?
For a bedroom, we recommend our 3-in-1 curtain, which combines 100%* blackout and thermal insulation. Total blackout ensures quality sleep by blocking outside light street lamps, car headlights, sunrise. Thermal insulation keeps a comfortable temperature all year round, with up to 7°C* difference between the window and the room. If you're sensitive to noise, the version with a soundproof layer (-22 dB attenuation*) is ideal, especially in an urban setting.
*Data from tests carried out under optimal conditions.
Can a single curtain really be thermal, blackout and soundproof at the same time?
Yes. Our 3-in-1 curtain is made up of 3 distinct layers: a premium polyester fabric on the visible side, a central blackout membrane that blocks 100%* of light, and a padded soundproof and thermal backing. Each layer serves a precise function. The measured result: total blackout, sound attenuation of -22 dB*, and a temperature gap of 7°C* between the window and the room.
*Data from tests carried out under optimal conditions.
Heavy curtain or light curtain: which is more effective for insulation?
For thermal and acoustic insulation, a dense, heavy curtain is often more effective than a light one. Fabric density and layer thickness are directly tied to sound attenuation and thermal barrier performance. Our 3-in-1 curtain is built with 3 dense layers, which explains why it weighs more than a standard decorative curtain. That weight is the proof of its effectiveness. Our 3-in-1 curtain is 620 g/m².
How many curtains do I need per window?
It depends on the width of your window and the look you want. Our online configurator guides you: enter your exact dimensions or pick a standard size and choose between one or two panels depending on your setup. We recommend 2 curtain panels for an even distribution of weight across the rod or your fixing system.
Thermal performance (winter/summer)
What temperature difference can a thermal curtain actually create?
Our 3-in-1 curtain creates a measured gap of 7°C* between the glass surface and the inside of the room. In winter, it forms a barrier against the cold coming in through the windows. In summer, it reduces heat from the sun's rays. This 7°C* gap translates directly into better comfort and lower heating or air conditioning consumption.
*Data from tests carried out under optimal conditions.
Does a thermal curtain work as well in summer as in winter?
Yes, a thermal curtain acts as insulation all year round. In winter, the padded thermal layer keeps the cold from getting through. In summer, the blackout membrane blocks the sun's rays and radiant heat. The principle is the same as double glazing: creating an insulating layer of air between the window and the room. Closing your thermal curtains during the hottest hours of the day noticeably reduces the rise in indoor temperature.
Can a thermal curtain replace double glazing?
A thermal curtain doesn't replace double glazing, but it complements it effectively and proves essential if you still have single glazing. Where double glazing acts on the pane itself, the 3-in-1 curtain creates an extra barrier in front of the window, with a measured 7°C* gap. For tenants who can't change their windows, it's a highly effective and less expensive way to improve insulation without renovation work.
Thermal curtain: how much can I expect to save on heating?
The exact saving depends on your home, the quality of your windows and your heating system. What is measurable: our 3-in-1 curtain reduces heat loss at the windows by creating a 7°C* gap. Windows account for an average of 10 to 15% of a home's heat loss. By covering all your windows with thermal curtains, the impact on your bill can be significant, especially if your home has single glazing or older windows.
Does a thermal curtain also protect against UV rays?
Yes. Our 100%* blackout membrane blocks UV rays entirely, on top of visible light. This protects your furniture, wood floors and fabrics from fading caused by prolonged sun exposure. It's an added benefit of our technical curtains: thermal insulation, light blocking and UV protection in a single product.
*Data from tests carried out under optimal conditions.
Acoustic performance (noise)
Is a soundproof curtain effective against street noise?
Yes, it is one of its main uses. Street noise: traffic, horns, passing vehicles. With an attenuation of -22 dB*, our 3-in-1 curtain brings that sound level back into a comfortable range. They are particularly effective in front of windows, which are the main entry point for outside noise into a home. For ground-floor flats or homes on a busy street, it is an immediate solution with no building work.
*Data from tests carried out under optimal conditions.
What is the difference between a soundproof curtain and an acoustic curtain?
Both terms describe the same function: reducing noise. "Soundproof curtain" and "acoustic curtain" are used interchangeably. The distinction is technical: "acoustic" can refer to absorbing sound within a room (reducing reverberation), while "soundproof" refers to insulating against noise coming from outside. Our 3-in-1 curtain does both: it dampens outside noise and slightly reduces interior resonance thanks to its dense padded backing.
Can a soundproof curtain replace wall insulation?
No, a soundproof curtain does not replace full wall insulation. It does, however, address the number one weak point in a home's insulation: the windows. Even with well-insulated walls, noise comes in mainly through the glazing. A soundproof curtain hung in front of your windows is a fast, affordable and effective way to gain acoustic comfort without any building work.
Soundproof curtain for a flat: does it really work?
Yes, and it is in fact one of the situations where our curtains are most effective. In a flat, noise nuisance comes mainly from the windows (street, courtyard, neighbours) and sometimes from doors. Our soundproof curtains significantly reduce perceived noise levels. They install with no building work, no drilling into walls, and fit most windows thanks to made-to-measure tailoring. For a tenant, it is a reversible soundproofing solution.
Blackout & privacy
Do your blackout curtains really block 100% of the light?
Yes, our 3-in-1 curtain delivers 100% blackout*. The central membrane built into its 3 layers blocks light completely, including direct sun at the height of summer. No ray gets through the fabric. To guarantee total blackout in practice, the curtain must extend well beyond the window.
*Data from tests carried out under optimal conditions.
Can a blackout curtain be used for a home cinema?
Absolutely. The 100% blackout* of the 3-in-1 curtain makes it an ideal solution for a home cinema. By blocking all outside light, you get complete darkness even in broad daylight. The bonus: the soundproof layer also improves the room's acoustics by reducing resonance and outside noise. You gain in picture quality and sound comfort at the same time.*Data from tests carried out under optimal conditions.
Does a blackout curtain also protect against neighbours' prying eyes?
Yes, the 100% blackout* of the 3-in-1 curtain means light does not get through, and neither do prying eyes. For ground-floor homes, those facing other buildings, or those overlooking a busy street, it guarantees privacy the moment the curtain is closed.
*Data from tests carried out under optimal conditions.
Blackout curtain or roller shutter: which should you choose?
The two are complementary. The roller shutter protects from the outside of the window. The blackout curtain works on the inside, with added benefits: thermal insulation, noise reduction and interior style. If you already have shutters, the blackout curtain reinforces insulation. If you have no shutters, a common case in flats, the blackout curtain is a complete and simple-to-install solution.
Do your blackout curtains still let light in at the sides?
The fabric itself blocks the light. A little light can, however, filter in at the sides, the top or the bottom of the curtain if it is not wide or long enough. That is why we always recommend an overhang beyond the window on each side. With our configurator, you enter the exact dimensions of your window and we guide you on the margins to allow for perfect blackout in practice.
Made-to-measure: taking measurements
How do I measure my windows for a made-to-measure curtain?
When you choose the made-to-measure option, measure the width of the rod or rail (not the window), then the height from the hanging point down to the floor or to the point you want. For the fabric width, allow 1.5 to 2 times the width of your rod for a beautiful draped effect and optimal performance. Our online configurator and our illustrated guides walk you through it step by step. If you have any doubts, our customer service is available Monday to Saturday.
What is the maximum height I can order for a made-to-measure curtain?
Our made-to-measure curtains are available up to 270 cm in height. This size covers the vast majority of homes, including Haussmann-style flats and rooms with above-average ceiling height. For the width, there is no minimum: we make them to your exact dimensions. For projects larger than 2.7 m, we invite you to contact us here.
What happens if I make a mistake in my measurements when I chose the made-to-measure option?
We offer the Exact-Fit guarantee, an option at €29.90 available at checkout. If you make a mistake in your measurements, we restart production of your curtain at the correct dimensions free of charge and deliver it to you again at no extra cost.
Should I measure the window or the rod to order?
Always measure the rod or rail, not the window. It is the width of your hanging system that determines the fabric width needed. For the height, start from the hanging point (ring, eyelet, heading tape) down to the floor or the desired finishing point: either a clean drop 2-3 cm off the floor, or a break-pooling drop for maximum insulation. Our online configurator guides you with clear diagrams for each type of finish (eyelets, pencil pleat, rod pocket).
Can I order a made-to-measure curtain for a front door or a patio door?
Yes, our made-to-measure curtains fit every type of opening: standard windows, patio doors, front doors, French doors. No minimum dimensions are required, and we make them up to 270 cm high. A soundproof curtain hung over a front door is one of the most effective ways to cut noise from the hallway or the street.
Tailoring & finishes
What headings are available for your curtains?
We offer four heading types: eyelets (modern look, glides smoothly on a rod), pencil pleat (regular folds, compatible with both tracks and hook rods), rod pocket (the rod slides directly through a hem for a clean finish), and the multifunctional system (compatible with several mounting types). You select your heading in our configurator when you order.
What colors are available?
Our range includes 7 colors designed to fit any interior: Blue, Green, Mint Green, Lilac, Grey, Off-white and Cream. These shades were chosen for their decorative versatility.
How many layers make up your technical curtains?
Our 3-in-1 curtain is made of 3 distinct layers, each with a specific function. The visible face is a premium polyester fabric with a dense, refined feel. The middle layer is a blackout membrane that blocks 100%* of the light. The back is a padded soundproof and thermal layer that delivers acoustic insulation (–22dB*) and thermal insulation (7°C* difference). These 3 layers work together to create a curtain with triple performance.
*Data from tests carried out under optimal conditions.
Is the build quality the same for all sizes?
Yes. For a given model, every curtain is made with the same materials and the same process, whatever the size ordered. A 120 cm wide 3-in-1 curtain has the same 3 layers, the same fabric density and the same heading as a 250 cm curtain.
Rod, track & mounting compatibility
Which types of rods are compatible with your curtains?
All rods are compatible with our curtains, because you choose your preferred heading type.
Can a soundproof curtain be mounted on a ceiling track?
Yes, provided you choose the pencil pleat or multifunctional heading, both compatible with ceiling-mounted tracks. Make sure your track is firmly fixed and can bear the weight of a 3-in-1 curtain, which is heavier than a standard decorative curtain. If in doubt, opt for reinforced wall fixings or a quality aluminium track.
Do you also sell rods or tracks?
No, we focus exclusively on making curtains. You will find rods and tracks in any major DIY and home decor store. The key is to choose a system strong enough to bear the weight of a dense technical curtain like our 3-in-1. We recommend metal rods or aluminium tracks rather than plastic models.
Is the 3-in-1 curtain too heavy for a standard rod?
Our 3-in-1 curtain is denser and heavier than a standard decorative curtain, around 620 g/m², because of its 3 layers. Most metal rods handle this weight with ease. Thin plastic rods and suction-cup systems, however, are not suitable. If you are unsure about the strength of your installation, check the maximum load stated by your rod manufacturer, or opt for a securely fixed wall or ceiling track.
Do you need a special mounting system for a wide-width curtain?
For wide widths (over 200 cm), we recommend an aluminium track fixed to the wall or ceiling rather than a rod. The track spreads the weight better and glides more smoothly along its full length. If you use a rod, add an intermediate support to stop it sagging in the middle. We can advise you on the right installation for your setup.
Delivery, manufacturing, lead times
What is the delivery time for a made-to-measure curtain?

Returns, exchanges, after-sales
Can a made-to-measure curtain be returned?
Because our made-to-measure curtains are each made individually to your exact dimensions, returns are not possible. This is the trade-off of a product built specifically for you that cannot be resold as is. To protect your purchase, we offer the Exact-Fit guarantee (€29.90), which covers you in the event of a measurement error.
How does the Exact-Fit guarantee work?
The Exact-Fit guarantee is an optional add-on at €29.90, added to your order for made-to-measure products. Care & durability
Can a thermal and soundproof curtain be machine washed?
Yes, our curtains are machine washable at low temperature (30 °C maximum, delicate cycle). Use a mild detergent without bleaching agents. To preserve their performance over time, you can also opt for professional dry cleaning. Avoid intensive spinning and the tumble dryer.
How long does a Kurtens technical curtain last?
With proper care (washing at low temperature, careful handling), our technical curtains are built to last several years with no loss of performance. The density of the polyester fabric and the strength of the construction ensure they hold up well over time. The soundproof and thermal layers keep their properties wash after wash, provided you follow the care instructions.
Does the soundproof padded backing lose effectiveness over time?
No, provided you follow the care instructions. The padded layer is built into the curtain structurally; it does not come away and does not compress significantly over time. Washing too frequently at high temperature or intensive spinning could, however, affect its density. By following our recommendations, the soundproof performance stays stable over time.
Personalization & styling advice
Which colors are available for Kurtens made-to-measure curtains?
We offer 7 colors: Blue, Green, Mint Green, Lilac, Grey, Off-white and Cream. These shades were selected to work with most contemporary, classic or Scandinavian interiors. From versatile neutrals (Grey, Off-white, Cream) to bolder accents (Lilac, Mint Green), every color is available in all dimensions and all finishes.
How do I choose the color of my curtain to suit my room?
For a bedroom, neutral tones (Grey, Off-white, Cream) promote calm and sleep. For a living room, a Green, Blue or Lilac curtain adds character without overwhelming the space. For small rooms, light colors (Cream, Off-white, Mint Green) make the space feel larger.
Can a technical curtain look just as good as a decorative one?
Yes. The visible face of our curtains is a premium fabric with a refined feel, available in 7 colors. Visually, nothing sets a Kurtens curtain apart from a high-end decorative curtain. The difference is invisible but real: behind the fabric, the 2 technical layers (blackout membrane + soundproof/thermal padded backing) deliver the performance. Decorative on the front, technical on the back.
Can you mix colors in the same room?
Yes, absolutely. Some customers choose a neutral color (Grey, Off-white) for the main windows and a bolder shade (Blue, Lilac) to create a focal point. The tones in our range are designed to work together.
