Thermal Curtain for a Front Door: Stop Cold and Draughts

A front door lets cold in through its gaps and its threshold, especially if it is old or glazed. A thermal curtain hung in front creates an insulating layer of air that cuts draughts, with no drilling into the door and no replacement.

This guide explains why cold comes in through the door, how a thermal curtain blocks it, which fabric and which dimensions to choose, and how to fit it.

Why cold comes in through the front door

The front door is a weak point in your insulation. Cold air passes under the leaf, around the frame and at the threshold, and a glazed door lets heat escape through the glass. The result is felt quickly: a draught in the hallway, a corridor cooler than the rest of the home.

Changing the door or redoing the seals solves part of the problem, but it is heavy work and costly. A thermal curtain treats the heat loss from the inside, simply and with no building work.

How a thermal curtain blocks the cold

A thermal curtain works through three mechanisms. First it creates a still layer of air between the door and the room, which slows the passage of cold. Its mass and density then limit conduction, and a lining can reflect heat back inside. The heavier and more covering the fabric, the clearer the effect. The full physics is set out in our article on how a cold-blocking thermal curtain works.

Which curtain to choose for a front door

Three criteria matter.

  • A dense, heavy fabric: it is mass that insulates. A sheer will do nothing, a thick curtain will.
  • Dimensions that cover wide: the curtain should extend beyond the door on each side and drop to the floor, even skim it, to seal the bottom. A curtain that is too tight lets the cold get around it.
  • Made-to-measure: a front door rarely has a standard dimension (fanlight, side glazing, ceiling height). Made-to-measure, the curtain fits the opening with no gap.

On the style side, the choice of fabrics, colours and finishes lets you match the curtain to your entrance. Kurtens makes these thermal curtains to measure, in several fabrics and colours.

How to fit it without drilling into the door

You do not fix the curtain to the door, but above it, on the wall or the frame. Fit the pole 10 to 15 cm above the frame to cover the fanlight, with a solid bracket: a thermal curtain is heavy, and a telescopic tension pole will not hold the load. For a door you open often, a portière rod, fixed at the top and bottom of the leaf, follows the movement of the door. Otherwise, a classic wall pole with a tieback to clear the way.

And the noise? Thermal and soundproofing go together

A door on a busy street lets in cold but also noise. A heavy curtain treats both: the same mass that blocks cold dampens sound. If noise is your priority, see our soundproof front door curtain collection and our article on the noise-reducing front door curtain.

Thermal curtain or other solutions

The curtain is not the only option against cold at the door, but it is the simplest and the most reversible.

Solution Effect Fitting
Draught excluder cuts the draught from the bottom only placed, immediate
Sealing strips reduces leaks from the frame stuck on, durable
Thermal curtain covers the whole door, air layer and mass pole, no drilling into the door
Replace the door fundamental solution building work, high cost

The curtain in fact combines very well with a draught excluder and seals. For windows, the same principle applies: see insulating your windows from the cold without building work.

Frequently asked questions

Is a thermal curtain effective on a front door?

Yes, provided it is heavy and covers the whole door with an overhang at the sides and down to the floor. It then cuts the draught and slows the cold.

Do you have to drill into the door to fit the curtain?

No. The pole is fitted above the door, on the wall or the frame. You do not drill into the leaf.

Which fabric to choose for a front door?

A dense, heavy fabric. It is mass that insulates. A sheer or a lightweight fabric will have no thermal effect.

How do you open the door with a curtain in front?

With a portière rod, fixed at the top and bottom of the leaf, the curtain follows the door. Otherwise, a tieback clears the way during the day.

Does a thermal curtain also block noise?

Yes. The mass of the fabric that slows the cold also dampens sound, useful for a door facing a busy street.

What size of curtain for a front door?

The curtain should extend beyond the door on each side and drop to the floor. As a door rarely has a standard dimension, made-to-measure is the safest choice.
