Why standard curtains are not enough for large windows.
Most ready-made curtains sold online and in stores are a maximum of 140 cm wide. For a 200 cm living room window, a 250 cm bay window, or a 180 cm double French door, the only option is to buy two panels and close them edge to edge.
The problem: two panels meeting in the center create a weak point. Even if well-adjusted, they let in a sliver of light, a cold draft, and some outside noise through the central gap. For a blackout curtain, it's a halo of light visible from the bed. For a thermal curtain, it's a leak that reduces insulation efficiency. For a soundproof curtain, it's a breach in the acoustic barrier.
The other problem is fabric quality. "Large-sized" curtains found in stores are often standard fabric widened, not technical multi-layer fabric. They are larger, but not more effective. The "blackout" or "thermal" label guarantees nothing if the fabric is 150 to 200 g/m².
| Configuration | Couverture | Interstice central | Occultation réelle | Isolation thermique |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 panneaux standard (140 cm chacun) | Partielle (jonction au centre) | 1 à 3 cm | 70 à 85 % | Réduite (fuite centrale) |
| 2 panneaux sur mesure avec chevauchement | Complète si bien ajustés | Chevauchement 15 à 20 cm | 90 à 95 % | Correcte |

Available sizes at Kurtens.
Four standard sizes cover the most common configurations: 100x150 cm (classic window), 150x230 cm (tall window), 250x230 cm (large living room window), and 300x270 cm (full-height bay window). If your window does not match any of these dimensions, the custom configurator allows you to order to the nearest centimeter.
The maximum height is 270 cm (limit of the fabric roll). This is sufficient for almost all homes, including Haussmannian apartments with high ceilings and modern houses with full-height bay windows.
The fabric is identical regardless of the size ordered: 620 g/m², multi-layered, with the same thermal insulation performance (up to 7°C gain*), blackout (100%), and sound reduction (22 dB*). A 300 cm wide curtain insulates exactly as much per square meter as a 100 cm curtain.
7 colors are available: grey, off-white, cream beige, mint green, green, lilac, and blue. Consult our color guide to choose according to your room.
Several finishes available: eyelets, gathering tape and rod pocket, or multi-functional. For larger widths, eyelets ensure an even drape and easy handling. Consult our fastening guide.
Beware of the rod: a wide curtain is a heavy curtain.
At 620 gsm, a curtain 300 cm wide and 270 cm high weighs approximately 5 kg. This is significantly heavier than a standard decorative curtain. The curtain rod must be up to the task.
Use a sturdy wall-mounted curtain rod, secured with intermediate brackets every 100 to 120 cm. For a 300 cm curtain, this means a minimum of 3 fixing points (one at each end, one in the center). The fixings must be suitable for your wall: expansion anchors for concrete, Molly bolts for plasterboard.
Telescopic curtain rods are not recommended for large widths. They are likely to sag in the middle under the weight of the curtain, creating a visible droop and light leaks at the top.

Which windows require a wide curtain.
Living room bay windows are the most common case. A standard bay is 200 to 300 cm wide and is the largest glazed surface in the home, therefore the main source of heat loss and outside noise. A single custom-made curtain covering the entire bay is more effective and more aesthetic than two panels. For
bay windows, consult our custom bay window curtain collection.
Double French doors (2 leaves) are generally 180 to 240 cm wide. The curtain is placed in front on a rod and does not hinder the opening of the leaves. It slides to the side when the door is opened.
Panoramic windows, common in recent constructions and architect-designed houses, can reach 300 cm or more in width. A custom-made curtain is often the only viable option for these dimensions.
Sliding bay windows work very well with a wide curtain. The curtain is placed in front of the bay on an independent rod and does not block the sliding mechanism. For the thermal insulation
of large glazed surfaces, also consult our custom thermal curtain collection.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the maximum width for a custom-made Kurtens curtain?
The largest standard size is 300x270 cm. Beyond that, the custom configurator allows you to order to the exact dimensions of your window. For width, there is no fixed limit for custom orders.
Do I need one or two curtains for a large window?
A single wide panel offers better insulation (no central gap), but is heavier to handle. Two panels are more practical for daily use (you open one side at a time) but leave a junction point in the center. For maximum insulation (thermal, sound, blackout), a single panel is recommended. For daily use with frequent opening, two custom-made panels with a 20 cm overlap in the center are a good compromise.
Does the curtain rod need to be special for a wide curtain?
Yes. The Kurtens curtain weighs 620 g/m². A 300 cm wide curtain weighs approximately 5 kg. The curtain rod must be wall-mounted, sturdy, with intermediate supports every 100 to 120 cm to prevent sagging. Telescopic rods are not recommended for large widths. Consult our fastening guide.
Does a wide curtain insulate as well as a standard curtain?
Yes. The fabric is identical regardless of the size: 620 gsm, multi-layered, with the same thermal insulation performance (up to 7°C gain*), blackout (100%), and sound reduction (22 dB*). Performance is per square meter, not per curtain.
Does a wide curtain hinder the opening of a sliding bay window?
No. The curtain is installed on a wall-mounted rod in front of the window, not on the window itself. It slides on the rod independently of the window mechanism. When you open the sliding window, you first push the curtain to the side, then you slide the window normally.
