Made-to-Measure Wide Width Curtains

140 cm wide is the limit of standard curtains, and it's not enough for patio doors, double French doors and large windows. Two narrow panels leave a central gap that lets through light, cold and noise. According to the ADEME, windows are the leading source of heat loss in a home, and the larger the glazed area, the greater the losses. A wide-width made-to-measure curtain from Kurtens covers the entire surface in a single panel, with no central gap. Our 3-in-1 curtain, for example, adds up to 7°C of thermal gain*, 22 dB of sound reduction* and 100% blackout*.

Made to measure to the exact centimetre or in standard sizes up to 300x270 cm. For a given model, performance is identical whatever the size. Several colors and finishes to choose from. Free delivery in mainland France, Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg.

Why standard curtains fall short for large windows.

Most ready-made curtains sold online and in stores are 140 cm wide at most. For a 200 cm living room window, a 250 cm patio door or a 180 cm double French door, the only option is to buy two panels and close them edge to edge.

The problem: two panels meeting in the centre create a weak spot. Even when well fitted, they let a thread of light, a draught of cold air and part of the outside noise through the central gap. For a blackout curtain, that means a halo of light visible from the bed. For a thermal curtain, it means a leak that reduces insulation efficiency. For a soundproof curtain, it means a breach in the acoustic barrier.

The other problem is fabric quality. Off-the-shelf "large" curtains are often widened standard fabric, not multi-layer technical fabric. They are bigger, but no more effective. A "blackout" or "thermal" label guarantees nothing if the fabric weighs 150 to 200 g/m².

One panel vs two panels: a comparison for large windows

The sizes available at Kurtens.

Four standard sizes cover the most common configurations: 100x150 cm (classic window), 150x230 cm (tall window), 250x230 cm (large living room window) and 300x270 cm (full-height patio door). If your window matches none of these dimensions, the made-to-measure configurator lets you order to the exact centimetre.

The maximum height is 270 cm (the limit of the fabric roll). That is enough for almost every home, including high-ceilinged Haussmann apartments and modern houses with full-height patio doors.

The fabric is identical whatever the size ordered: 620 g/m², multi-layer, with the same thermal insulation performance (up to 7°C of gain*), blackout (100%) and noise reduction (22 dB*). A 300 cm wide curtain insulates exactly as much per square metre as a 100 cm one.

7 colors are available: grey, off-white, cream, mint green, green, lilac and blue. See our color guide to choose according to your room.

Several finishes: eyelets, pencil pleat and rod pocket or multifunctional. For wide widths, eyelets ensure an even drape and easy handling. See our heading guide.

Mind the rod: a wide curtain is a heavy curtain.

For a dense curtain (up to 620 g/m²), a panel 300 cm wide and 270 cm high weighs around 5 kg. That is far heavier than a standard decorative curtain. The rod has to be up to it.

Use a sturdy wall-mounted rod, fixed with intermediate brackets every 100 to 120 cm. For a 300 cm curtain, that means at least 3 fixing points (one at each end, one in the centre). The fixings must suit your wall: expansion plugs for concrete, Molly bolts for plasterboard.

Telescopic rods are not recommended for wide widths. They risk bowing in the centre under the curtain's weight, which creates visible sagging and light leaks at the top.

Which windows need a wide-width curtain.

Living room patio doors are the most common case. A standard patio door is 200 to 300 cm wide and is the largest glazed surface in the home, so the main source of heat loss and outside noise. A single made-to-measure curtain covering the whole door is more effective and more attractive than two panels. For patio
doors, see our made-to-measure patio door curtain collection.

Double French doors (2 leaves) are generally 180 to 240 cm wide. The curtain hangs in front on a rod and does not get in the way of opening the leaves. It slides to the side when you open the door.

Panoramic windows, common in recent builds and architect-designed houses, can reach 300 cm wide or more. A made-to-measure curtain is often the only viable option at these dimensions.

Sliding doors work very well with a wide-width curtain. The curtain hangs in front of the door on a separate rod and does not block the sliding mechanism. For the thermal
insulation of large glazed surfaces, see also our made-to-measure thermal curtain collection.

Wide-Width Curtain

Frequently asked questions.

What is the maximum width for a made-to-measure Kurtens curtain?

The largest standard size is 300x270 cm. Beyond that, the made-to-measure configurator lets you order to the exact dimensions of your window. For width, there is no fixed limit with made-to-measure.

Do I need one or two panels for a large window?

A single wide panel offers better insulation (no central gap), but it is heavier to handle. Two panels are more practical day to day (you open one side at a time) but leave a join point in the centre. For maximum insulation (thermal, soundproof, blackout), a single panel is recommended. For daily use with frequent opening, two made-to-measure panels with a 20 cm overlap in the centre are a good compromise.

Does a wide-width curtain need a special rod?

Yes. A dense technical curtain weighs up to 620 g/m². A 300 cm wide panel then weighs around 5 kg. The rod must be wall-mounted, sturdy, with intermediate brackets every 100 to 120 cm to prevent bowing. Telescopic rods are not recommended for wide widths. See our heading guide.

Does a wide-width curtain insulate as well as a standard curtain?

Yes. For a given model, the fabric and its performance are identical whatever the size (performance is measured per square metre, not per curtain). The 3-in-1 curtain, for example, keeps its 620 g/m², its 100% blackout*, its 7°C* and its 22 dB* whatever the width.

Does a wide-width curtain get in the way of opening a sliding door?

No. The curtain hangs on a wall-mounted rod in front of the door, not on the door itself. It slides on the rod independently of the door's mechanism. When you open the sliding door, you first push the curtain to the side, then slide the door as normal.
