Custom Patio Door Curtains

A standard 200x240 cm patio door loses up to 4 times more heat than an insulated wall of the same surface area, according to ADEME. A custom-made Kurtens patio door curtain weighing 620 g/m² creates a complete barrier over the entire surface: up to 7°C of thermal gain*, 22 dB of sound attenuation*, and 100% blackout*.

The Kurtens curtain is made to the exact dimensions of your patio door, down to the centimeter. Standard sizes available up to 300x270 cm. Compatible with sliding doors (installed on a separate rod in front of the door). Multi-layer fabric 620 g/m², 7 colors. Free delivery in mainland France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Luxembourg.

The bay window: thermal and acoustic weak point of your home.

A bay window 240 cm wide and 220 cm high represents more than 5 m² of glass surface. Glass conducts cold and heat much faster than a wall. In winter, this surface radiates cold throughout the room, creates downward drafts along the glazing, and forces the heating system to constantly compensate.

In summer, the effect is reversed. A south or west-facing bay window captures direct solar radiation for several hours. The room temperature can rise by 5 to 10°C in just a few hours, turning the living room into a greenhouse. Venetian blinds or sheer curtains are not enough: they filter visible light but let a large part of the thermal radiation pass through.

Acoustically, the glazed surface transmits much more noise than a wall. Road traffic, construction, lawnmowers, neighbors' voices: everything passes through the bay window with an intensity that small windows don't have, simply because the surface area is larger.

The curtain creates a dense textile barrier in front of this entire surface. It simultaneously addresses the three problems: cold, heat, and noise.

Why is custom-made essential for a bay window?

Patio doors have dimensions that don't match any standard off-the-shelf curtain sizes. A bay can be 200, 240, 280, or 300 cm wide, with heights from 200 to 260 cm. Ready-made curtains generally stop at 140 cm wide. Buying two panels creates a central gap that lets in light, cold, and noise.

The curtain must also extend 15 to 20 cm beyond the bay on each side and touch the floor. If the fabric doesn't cover the entire surface, cold and noise bypass the curtain from the sides and bottom. For a 240 cm bay, you therefore need a curtain about 280 cm wide: impossible to find in standard sizes.

The Kurtens configurator allows you to order to exact dimensions. Standard sizes go up to 300x270 cm, which covers most common patio doors. Beyond that, custom-made takes over. The maximum height is 270 cm, sufficient for standard full-height bays. For dimensions and measurement methods, consult our size guide. For extra-wide curtains, also consult our custom extra-wide curtain collection.

Compatible with sliding bays and French windows.

The curtain does not attach to the patio door. It is hung on a separate wall-mounted curtain rod, installed above the door frame. The curtain hangs in front of the door, and the door slides normally behind the curtain.

To open the door: push the curtain to the side (it slides on the rod), then slide the door open as usual. The action is simple and quick. Grommets are the recommended finish for sliding patio doors: the curtain slides with very little friction. Pleated tape is also suitable for a more elegant drape. Consult our guide to fixings.

For fixed (non-sliding) patio doors, the principle is the same: wall-mounted curtain rod in front, curtain hanging in front of the glass. No mechanism constraints to consider.

The curtain weighs 620 g/m². For a 300 cm door, the total weight is approximately 5 kg. Provide a robust wall-mounted curtain rod with intermediate supports every 100 to 120 cm. Telescopic rods are not recommended for these dimensions.

Triple performance for living room comfort.

The Kurtens curtain combines three functions in a single 620 g/m² multi-layered fabric.

Thermal insulation: up to 7°C gain between the window surface and the inside of the room*. In winter, the living room stays warmer without increasing heating. In summer, the curtain blocks solar radiation and prevents overheating. To learn more about thermal insulation, consult our custom thermal curtain collection.

100% blackout: zero stray light, regardless of the curtain color. Useful for watching TV without glare, for video projections, or simply for sleeping in a living room transformed into an extra bedroom. To learn more, consult our custom blackout curtain collection.

Sound insulation: 22 dB sound attenuation*. On a large bay window, the reduction is particularly noticeable because of the large treated surface. Traffic, garden, and neighborhood noises are significantly reduced. Consult our custom acoustic curtain collection.

7 colors are available: gray, off-white, cream beige, mint green, green, lilac, and blue. For a living room, neutral shades (gray, cream beige, off-white) easily integrate with most decorations. Consult our color guide.

Bay Window Curtain

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a curtain for a bay window obstruct the opening of the sliding bay window?

No. The curtain is suspended from an independent wall-mounted rod, in front of the bay window. The bay window slides normally behind the curtain. To open, push the curtain aside (it slides on the rod), then slide the bay window. The eyelets make sliding easier.

What size curtain for a 240 cm patio door?

For a 240 cm bay window, add 30 to 40 cm for overhang (15 to 20 cm on each side). You need a curtain approximately 270 to 280 cm wide. The standard size 300x270 cm is suitable, or order custom-made to exact dimensions. Consult our size guide.

Does the curtain really insulate a large bay window from the cold?

Yes. The curtain creates an insulating air gap between the cold surface of the window and the interior of the room (up to 7°C gain*). The larger the glazed surface, the greater the heat loss without a curtain, and therefore the more noticeable the effect of the curtain. It is with large windows that the difference is felt most.

Can you put a curtain in front of a fixed picture window?

Yes, the principle is the same: wall-mounted rod fixed above the bay, curtain that falls in front of the glass. Without the constraint of a sliding mechanism, installation is even simpler. The curtain can remain closed permanently or be opened during the day according to your preferences.

Should a bay window have one or two panels?

A single wide panel offers good insulation (no gap in the center), but it is heavier to handle. Two panels that meet in the center are more practical if you frequently open the bay. In this case, plan for a 20 cm overlap in the center to prevent leaks. For more details, consult our custom wide curtain collection.

Does the curtain provide protection from the heat in the summer on a south-facing bay window?

Yes. 100% blackout blocks direct sunlight, which prevents the greenhouse effect in the room. Combined with the 620 gsm fabric's thermal insulation, the curtain keeps the room cooler without air conditioning. The impact is strongest in summer on south and west-facing windows.

What is the delivery time?

Allow 5 to 7 days for manufacturing and 5 to 10 days for shipping. Each custom curtain is made to your exact dimensions. Delivery is free in metropolitan France, Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg. The Exact-Fit guarantee (€29.90) covers measurement errors.
