Custom soundproof curtain

22 dB of sound attenuation* with 620 g/m² fabric: a custom-made Kurtens acoustic curtain reduces perceived noise by a factor of 4, meeting WHO thresholds for sleep (30 dB). A standard curtain weighing 150 to 300 g/m² achieves 5 to 7 dB, a barely perceptible difference. At 620 g/m², made to the exact dimensions of your window without side acoustic bridges, attenuation increases to 22 dB*.

Why dimensions are decisive for soundproofing.

A poorly sized soundproof curtain, even a high-quality one, loses much of its effectiveness because of three weak points:

  • The side gap between the curtain and the wall: 2 cm of clearance on each side can reduce soundproofing effectiveness.
  • The floor gap: sound travels around the curtain from below if the drop is not adjusted
  • The insufficient width: a curtain that is too narrow leaves the edges of the window exposed

At Kurtens, our standard sizes are calculated to cover the most common window configurations with the recommended overhangs. For other openings, the made-to-measure option lets you enter your exact dimensions with a side overhang on each side, a floor drop of 2 to 3 cm and a height adjusted from floor to ceiling or window to ceiling. Coverage and installation contribute to the result; they do not guarantee 22 dB across the entire surface.

What noises can a soundproof curtain handle?

A curtain in front of a window can help attenuate airborne noise passing through that opening: voices, traffic or construction work. It does not address transmission through walls, floors and the building structure. Results depend on the noise and installation; 22 dB alone cannot predict the final sound level of a construction site.

How does the soundproofing of a Kurtens curtain work?

Sound absorption and sound insulation address different needs. Fabric weight alone cannot determine a curtain’s performance.

Absorption reduces sound reflections and reverberation within a room. Sound insulation aims to limit noise transmission between spaces. An attenuation value depends on frequencies and measurement conditions; the stated 22 dB is not a guaranteed reduction of every noise in your home.

Soundproof Curtains

Frequently asked questions.

Can you soundproof your windows without replacing them?

A suitable curtain and window seals in good condition can complement each other. First check where the noise travels. A curtain does not replace treatment of other transmission paths; results depend on the window and installation.

What is the difference between a soundproof curtain and an acoustic curtain?

Sound insulation aims to limit noise transmission between two spaces. Absorption treats reflections and reverberation within a room. Product names are not enough: compare documented performance that matches your needs.

How can you soundproof a window without any building work?

Check the seals and window coverage, then choose mounting suitable for the curtain’s weight. An existing pole can only be reused if its supports and load capacity are suitable; installation without drilling is not guaranteed.

What is the best fabric for a soundproof curtain?

Compare fabric construction and acoustic results together with their measurement conditions. Fabric weight alone does not give attenuation in dB. Kurtens fabric has 3 layers and weighs 620 g/m²; its stated attenuation is up to 22 dB under optimal installation and test conditions.

Is a soundproof curtain also thermal?

The Kurtens soundproof curtain uses the same fabric as the 3-in-1: 3 layers, 620 g/m², 100 % blackout and a thermal gain of up to 7 °C measured in a laboratory. These features do not automatically apply to every thick curtain.

Are soundproof curtains effective?

A curtain designed to limit sound transmission can help attenuate noise passing through the covered opening. Kurtens states up to 22 dB under optimal installation and test conditions. Results in your home depend on frequencies, coverage and installation.

What is the best noise-blocking curtain?

Choose according to the noise, documented performance, dimensions and mounting. Kurtens 3-in-1 fabric combines up to 22 dB attenuation under optimal installation and test conditions, 100 % blackout and up to 7 °C thermal gain measured in a laboratory. The 3-in-1 range comes in 14 colours.

Can a curtain block noise?

A curtain does not block every noise. The stated attenuation of up to 22 dB does not guarantee the same result for every frequency or home. Structure-borne noise, such as footsteps upstairs, requires treatment suited to its transmission path.

How do you choose an effective soundproof curtain?

Check acoustic results and measurement conditions, fabric construction, coverage and mounting. A standard size can work if it properly covers the opening; made-to-measure dimensions help when the available sizes do not fit.
