Made-to-Measure Acoustic Door Curtains

22 dB of sound reduction* on a front door, with no work and no changes to the door: a 620 g/m² Kurtens soundproof curtain hangs on a rod above the frame and cuts noise from the hallway, the neighbours and the stairwell. The WHO recommends a level below 30 dB for sleep: on a door that lets through 50 dB, a soundproof curtain brings the noise down to around 28 dB.

Beyond sound insulation, it is a true thermal curtain for your front door: it blocks the cold drafts that pass under and around the door (up to 7°C of thermal gain*) and provides 100% blackout if your door has glazing. Because it handles cold and noise together, a single thermal and soundproof insulating curtain for your front door is enough, with no work involved. Made to measure to the exact dimensions of your door frame. Free delivery in mainland France, Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg. Lead time: 2 to 3 weeks.

Why the front door is the number one source of noise in an apartment.

In an apartment, the front door is the acoustic weak point. Load-bearing walls dampen sound, double-glazed windows filter outside noise, but the front door stays a thin panel with seals that wear out, a frame that is rarely perfect and no acoustic insulation built into the panel.

The noises that get through: conversations in the hallway, neighbors slamming doors, the elevator, footsteps on the stairs, deliveries, heels on the tiled floor of the common areas. These are airborne noises, meaning sound waves that travel through the air and pass through the gaps around the door.

The usual solutions require work: replacing the door (1,500 to 3,000€), fitting an acoustic door block, adding padding or installing an entrance vestibule. A soundproof curtain hung in front of the door is the first step to take: no work, no changes to the door, effective right away.

How does a soundproof curtain in front of a front door work?

The curtain hangs on a wall-mounted rod fixed above the door frame, exactly like a window curtain. The fabric falls in front of the door and creates a barrier that absorbs and dampens sound waves before they reach your home.

The Kurtens curtain reduces noise by 22 dB*. To put that in concrete terms: a hallway conversation at 65 dB (clearly audible through a standard door) drops to around 43 dB, the equivalent of a faint, barely perceptible distant murmur. This is not the total soundproofing of a recording studio, but it is the difference between noise that bothers you and background noise that no longer gets in the way.

The curtain's effectiveness depends directly on its coverage. It must extend 15 to 20 cm beyond the door frame on each side to stop sound from going around the fabric. It must touch the floor to eliminate leaks from below. This is exactly why made-to-measure is essential: front doors come in varied widths (83 cm as standard, 93 cm for a wide door, up to 140 cm for a double door). A standard size will never cover your frame properly.

The 620 g/m² multilayer fabric is what sets it apart from a regular curtain. A decorative curtain of 150 to 200 g/m² reduces noise by 5 to 8 dB at best. At 620 g/m², the mass of the fabric absorbs significantly more sound energy. The heavier and denser the fabric, the greater the reduction. To go deeper into soundproofing with textiles, explore our made-to-measure soundproof curtain collection.

The curtain does not get in the way of opening the door. It pushes aside naturally when the door opens inward. Day to day, the motion is the same as passing through a window curtain. No need to unhook it or tie it back.

Thermal curtain for a front door: block out cold and drafts

The front door is not just a source of noise. It is also a major source of cold drafts, especially in winter. Cold air from the hallway, stairwell or entrance lobby seeps in through the seals, under the door and around the frame.

The Kurtens curtain delivers up to 7°C of thermal gain* by creating a layer of still air between the door and the fabric. This air gap acts as natural insulation. The result: the entrance is less cold, the heating works less and comfort improves right away.

If your front door has glazing (glass door, transom), the curtain also provides 100% blackout, which can be useful in ground-floor apartments or for doors opening onto a hallway lit at night. To learn more about thermal insulation, explore our made-to-measure thermal curtain collection.

Choosing and installing your front-door soundproof curtain

Start by measuring your door frame. Take the inside width of the frame and add 30 to 40 cm in total (15 to 20 cm of overhang on each side). For the height, measure from the planned rod position (10 to 15 cm above the frame) down to the floor. The curtain should just graze the floor to eliminate sound and thermal leaks from below. For a detailed guide with diagrams, see our size guide.

The maximum height of this curtain is 270 cm, which covers all standard front doors and most high-ceilinged apartment-building doors. For a taller door or window, our extra-long collection goes up to 400 cm.

For the finish, eyelets are recommended for a front door: the curtain slides easily on the rod, which makes daily handling smooth. Pencil pleat also works if you prefer a finer drape. A rod pocket is less suited here because it slides less easily. See our heading guide to compare.

The rod must be wall-mounted and sturdy. The curtain weighs 620 g/m², which calls for suitable fixings. Telescopic rods are not advised: they may sag or fall with a curtain of this weight, especially in a high-traffic spot like a front door.

7 colors are available: grey, off-white, cream, mint green, green, lilac and blue. All offer the same acoustic and thermal performance. Choose based on the feel of your entrance. See our color guide.

Front Door Soundproof Curtain

Frequently asked questions.

Is a soundproof curtain in front of a front door really effective?

Yes. The Kurtens curtain reduces noise by 22 dB*. In practice, a conversation heard clearly through the door becomes a distant murmur that is barely perceptible. This is not total soundproofing, but it is enough to remove everyday nuisance (voices in the hallway, slamming doors, elevator noise). Effectiveness depends on coverage: the curtain should extend 15 to 20 cm beyond the frame on each side and touch the floor.

Does the curtain get in the way of opening the door?

No. The curtain hangs from a rod above the door frame, not on the door itself. When you open the door, the curtain pushes aside naturally. The motion is the same as walking through a window curtain. No need to unhook it or tie it back day to day.

How do you measure for a made-to-measure front door curtain?

Eyelets are recommended: the curtain slides easily on the rod, which makes everyday use very smooth. Pencil pleat also works for a more elegant look. In every case, the rod must be wall-mounted and solid (no telescopic rod): the curtain weighs 620 g/m². See our fixings guide.

Does the curtain also insulate against cold coming from the door?

Yes. The curtain creates an insulating air gap between the door and the inside of your home, which blocks cold drafts (up to 7°C of thermal gain*). This is especially useful when the door opens onto an unheated hallway, a stairwell or an entrance hall.

Does a soundproof curtain replace changing the door?

No, these are two complementary solutions. Replacing a front door with an acoustic model costs 1,500 to 3,000€ and requires work. The soundproof curtain installs in 30 minutes, with no work, and delivers a first significant reduction in noise (22 dB*). If noise remains too present after installing the curtain, changing the door can be considered as a complement.

What is the delivery time?

Expect 2 to 3 weeks between order and delivery. Manufacturing takes 5 to 7 days and delivery 5 to 10 days. Each made-to-measure curtain is made to your exact dimensions. Delivery is free in mainland France, Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg. The optional Exact-Fit guarantee (29.90€) covers measurement errors.

Is there a thermal curtain for a front door?

Yes. The 620 g/m² Kurtens curtain hung in front of a front door blocks the cold drafts that pass under and around the door, up to 7°C of thermal gain*. The front door is often the coldest point in a home: its three layers form a barrier there with no work and no modification to the door. The same curtain also insulates against hallway noise.

*Under optimal installation and test conditions.

Thermal and soundproof insulating curtain for a front door: do you need two curtains?

No, just one. The three Kurtens layers combine thermal insulation (cold, drafts) and soundproof insulation (hallway noise, neighbors, the staircase). You do not choose between the two: a made-to-measure front door curtain handles cold and noise at the same time.
