Why the front door is the primary source of noise in an apartment

In an apartment, the entrance door is the acoustic weak point. Load-bearing walls attenuate sounds, double-glazed windows filter out outside noise, but the entrance door remains a thin wall with seals that wear out, a rarely perfect frame, and no integrated acoustic insulation in the panel.

Noises that pass through: conversations in the hallway, neighbors' slamming doors, elevator noise, footsteps on the stairs, deliveries, heels on the common area tiles. These are airborne noises, meaning sound waves that travel through the air and pass through unsealed spaces around the door.

Classic solutions require work: changing the door (€1,500 to €3,000), installing an acoustic door block, adding padding, or installing an entrance airlock. An acoustic curtain placed in front of the door is the first measure to take: no work, no modification of the door, effective immediately.

How does an acoustic curtain work in front of an entrance door?

The curtain is hung on a wall-mounted rod above the doorframe, exactly like a window curtain. The fabric hangs in front of the door and creates a barrier that absorbs and attenuates sound waves before they enter the dwelling.

The Kurtens curtain attenuates noise by 22 dB*. To give a concrete example: a conversation in the hallway at 65 dB (clearly audible through a standard door) is reduced to about 43 dB, which is the equivalent of a distant, barely perceptible whisper. This is not the total soundproofing of a recording studio, but it is the difference between disturbing noise and background noise that is no longer bothersome.

The effectiveness of the curtain depends directly on its coverage. It must extend 15 to 20 cm beyond the doorframe on each side to prevent sound from circumventing the fabric. It must touch the floor to eliminate leaks from below. This is precisely why custom-made is essential: entrance doors have varying widths (83 cm as standard, 93 cm for a wide door, up to 140 cm for a double door). A standard size will never properly cover your doorframe.

The 620 g/m² multi-layered fabric is what differentiates it from a classic curtain. A decorative curtain weighing 150 to 200 g/m² attenuates at most 5 to 8 dB. At 620 g/m², the fabric's mass absorbs significantly more sound energy. The heavier and denser the fabric, the greater the attenuation. To learn more about textile sound insulation, consult our custom soundproof curtain collection.

The curtain does not hinder the opening of the door. It naturally pushes aside when the door opens inward. On a daily basis, the action is the same as passing through a window curtain. There's no need to unhook or tie it back.

The thermal bonus: blocking draughts from the door

The front door is not just a source of noise. It is also a major source of cold drafts, especially in winter. Cold air from the hallway, stairwell, or entrance hall seeps in through the seals, under the door, and around the frame.

The Kurtens curtain provides up to 7°C of thermal gain* by creating a layer of still air between the door and the fabric. This layer of air acts as a natural insulator. The result: the entrance is less cold, the heating works less, and comfort immediately increases.

If your front door has glazing (glazed door, transom), the curtain also offers 100% blackout, which can be useful in ground-floor apartments or doors leading to a lit corridor at night. To learn more about thermal insulation, see our made-to-measure thermal curtain collection.

Choosing and installing your soundproof front door curtain

Start by measuring your door frame. Take the interior width of the frame and add a total of 30 to 40 cm (15 to 20 cm overhang on each side). For the height, measure from the intended rod placement (10 to 15 cm above the frame) to the floor. The curtain should brush the floor to eliminate sound and thermal leaks from below. For a detailed guide with diagrams, consult our size guide.

The maximum custom height is 270 cm, which covers all standard entry doors and the majority of high-ceiling building doors.

For the finish, eyelets are recommended for an entry door: the curtain slides easily on the rod, making daily handling smooth. The gathering tape also works if you prefer a finer drape. The rod pocket is less suitable here because it doesn't slide as easily. Consult our fastening guide to compare.

The curtain rod must be wall-mounted and sturdy. The curtain weighs 620 g/m², which requires appropriate fastenings. Telescopic rods are not recommended: they risk bending or falling with a curtain of this weight, especially in a frequently used passage like an entry door.

7 colors are available: gray, off-white, cream beige, mint green, green, lilac, and blue. All offer the same acoustic and thermal performance. Choose according to the ambiance of your entryway. Consult our color guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are soundproof curtains in front of a front door really effective?

Yes. The Kurtens curtain reduces noise by 22 dB*. Specifically, a conversation clearly heard through the door becomes a distant, barely perceptible murmur. This is not total soundproofing, but it is enough to eliminate everyday disturbances (voices in the hallway, slamming doors, elevator noise). Effectiveness depends on coverage: the curtain must extend 15 to 20 cm beyond the frame on each side and touch the floor.

Does the curtain obstruct the door from opening?

No. The curtain hangs from a rod above the doorframe, not on the door itself. When you open the door, the curtain naturally pushes aside. The action is the same as walking through a window curtain. There's no need to unhook it or tie it back daily.

How do I measure for a custom front door curtain?

Eyelets are recommended: the curtain slides easily on the rod, making everyday use very smooth. The pencil pleat tape is also suitable for a more elegant look. In any case, the curtain rod must be wall-mounted and sturdy (no telescopic rods): the curtain weighs 620 g/m². Consult our mounting guide.

Does the curtain also insulate against the cold coming from the door?

Yes. The curtain creates an insulating air pocket between the door and the interior of the dwelling, which blocks cold drafts (up to 7°C of thermal gain*). This is particularly useful when the door opens onto an unheated hallway, a stairwell, or an entrance hall.

Does a soundproof curtain replace a door replacement?

No, these are two complementary solutions. Replacing an entrance door with an acoustic model costs €1,500 to €3,000 and requires work. A soundproof curtain can be installed in 30 minutes, without any work, and provides a significant initial noise reduction (22 dB*). If the noise remains too present after the curtain is installed, replacing the door can be considered as a complementary measure.

What is the delivery time?

Allow 2 to 3 weeks between order and receipt. Manufacturing takes 5 to 7 days and delivery takes 5 to 10 days. Each custom blind is made to your exact dimensions. Delivery is free in metropolitan France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Luxembourg. The optional Exact-Fit guarantee (€29.90) covers measurement errors.
