Made-to-Measure Room-Divider Curtain: Divide Without Building

A heavy room-divider curtain, hung from floor to ceiling, sets off a space, dampens noise and blocks draughts between two zones, without building a partition and with no loss of floor area. It is a simple, reversible way to create a sleeping nook, a home office or a dressing area.

This guide explains when to choose a curtain over a partition wall, what it really delivers, which model to choose and how to install it on a ceiling track.

Why divide a room with a curtain rather than a wall

A curtain has three advantages a wall does not. It is reversible: open it and you get the whole space back. It needs no partition to be built: a ceiling track is enough, and everything comes down again. And once open, it takes up neither the floor area nor the light a wall would. The trade-off: it does not replace a true partition when it comes to insulation, which we cover below.

What it is for

  • Sleeping nook in a studio: separate the bed from the living area, with a blackout curtain to darken the bed side.
  • Home office: visually screen off a work corner from the rest of the room.
  • Dressing area: close off a storage space without a door.
  • Large room: structure one volume into two distinct settings.

What a room-divider curtain really delivers

Let us be clear about expectations. A room-divider curtain first creates an instant visual barrier. A blackout curtain keeps your privacy day and night; a light-filtering one keeps it by day, but in the evening, with a lamp on, silhouettes show through. A heavy, dense fabric also dampens noise between the two spaces and slows draughts, which helps insulate a corner thermally. It does not match a masonry wall for sound, though: it reduces noise, it does not eliminate it. To go further, see soundproofing an apartment without building work.

Which curtain to choose

For an effective divider, aim for weight. A heavy, dense fabric, such as velvet or a multi-layer, divides a space better than a sheer: it hangs straight, screens well and absorbs sound. For a sleeping nook, add blackout to get full darkness. And since a divider runs from floor to ceiling, an extra-long made-to-measure curtain is the natural fit. The made-to-measure soundproof curtain collection brings together the densest fabrics.

How to install it

The divider hangs on a track fixed to the ceiling, running across the room from one side to the other without sagging. A discreet track, sometimes built into a false ceiling, lets the curtain glide smoothly. You drill no walls: everything is held by the ceiling, which also allows curved or angled paths to mark off a specific corner.

Dimensions and made-to-measure

A good divider runs from floor to ceiling, with no gap at the top or bottom, to cut the space off cleanly. For the width, Kurtens recommends 2 to 2.5 times the length of the track (2.5 to 3 times for the linen-effect light-filtering curtain), split between the panels: enter the flat width of each panel in the configurator. Ceiling heights and unusual layouts make made-to-measure the natural choice: the curtain is made to the dimensions you enter.

Which curtain should you choose to divide a room in two?

Choose by use, with a curtain hung from floor to ceiling on a ceiling track. To screen off the other side and dampen noise, take the 3-in-1 thermal and soundproof blackout curtain, with three layers. To darken with a lighter fabric, the single-layer blackout curtain. To keep light and daytime privacy, the linen-effect light-filtering curtain.

  • Sleeping nook: the 3-in-1 weighs 620 g/m². It is 100% blackout, darkens the bed side and slows draughts.
  • Darkness with a lighter fabric: the single-layer blackout curtain is 100% blackout in a single 315 g/m² layer, with a softer drape. It is neither thermal nor soundproof.
  • Home office or dressing area by day: the linen-effect light-filtering curtain filters about 70% of the light. In the evening, with a lamp on, silhouettes show through: pair it with a blackout curtain if privacy also matters at night.

The configurator accepts any size up to 270 cm high by 1,000 cm wide, or up to 600 cm high by 270 cm wide. Beyond that, customer service looks at your project.

Which curtain should you choose to divide two rooms and reduce noise?

Choose a heavy curtain with three dense layers, such as the 3-in-1 thermal and soundproof blackout curtain, which reduces noise by up to 22 dB. It limits sound passing between two zones, without stopping it the way a wall would. Hang it from floor to ceiling, with no gap at the sides, so sound does not go around the curtain.

Effectiveness comes first from the material: three dense layers absorb and break up sound waves. It then comes from the fit: sound gets through the gaps at the top, bottom and sides. Made-to-measure means the curtain is made to the dimensions you enter; the installation must then close those gaps. The pleats also help a little. Kurtens states a reduction of up to 22 dB for the 3-in-1: the result in your home depends on the installation.

The curtain works on airborne noise, such as voices or the television. Do not count on it for impact noise, such as footsteps, carried through the floor and walls.

Can a soundproof curtain on a ceiling track be used to divide a room?

Yes. A heavy soundproof curtain hangs from a track fixed to the ceiling and divides the room over its full height. Check that the ceiling, the track, its gliders and its fixings can carry the total weight of the curtain: the 3-in-1 weighs 620 g/m². The curtain then dampens noise between the two zones, without insulating like a wall.

On a track, choose the heading tape, supplied with its hooks, or the multifunction system; eyelets do not suit a track. Check that the hooks fit the gliders of your track. Kurtens sells no rod, track, bracket or glider, and does not install: have the track fixed according to its manufacturer's instructions, with fixings suited to your ceiling.

A single panel, when the span allows it, avoids the gap in the middle where sound gets through.

Can an acoustic curtain divide two rooms or separate the living room from the kitchen?

Yes. A heavy acoustic curtain closes off a passage between two rooms or separates the living room from an open kitchen. The 3-in-1, with three dense layers, dampens noise from one side to the other, without stopping it like a wall. On the kitchen side, keep it away from the cooking area and leave the hood and vents clear.

To close off a passage, follow the rule for a door: the rod or track extends 15 cm beyond each side, and the total curtain width is 2 to 2.5 times that length. Enter the flat width of each panel in the configurator, and check that the open curtain fully clears the passage.

Near a kitchen, the curtain can catch steam and splashes: follow our advice to care for a technical curtain.

How do you reduce noise between rooms or at the office with curtains?

Use a curtain with three dense layers, such as the 3-in-1, hung from floor to ceiling and fitted to limit gaps. In a studio, it separates the sleeping nook from the living area. In an open-plan office, it marks off a work zone or a meeting corner. It muffles voices, without giving the insulation of a closed room.

Frequently asked questions

Can a curtain divide a room?

Yes. It creates an instant visual barrier, dampens noise and blocks draughts between two zones, without building a partition and in a reversible way.

Does a room-divider curtain block out noise?

A heavy fabric dampens noise between the two spaces, but it does not match a partition wall. It reduces sound without eliminating it.

How do you install a room-divider curtain?

On a track fixed to the ceiling, running across the room without sagging. You drill no walls, which allows straight, curved or angled paths.

Which curtain to divide a sleeping nook?

The 3-in-1, blackout and three-layered, from floor to ceiling, to screen, dampen noise and create full darkness on the bed side.

Do you need the landlord's permission?

If you rent, check your lease and, if in any doubt, ask for your landlord's agreement before fixing the track to the ceiling. The curtain comes down and the track can be removed.

What height for a room-divider curtain?

From floor to ceiling, with no gap at the top or bottom. Varied ceiling heights make made-to-measure the natural choice.
