Sloped ceiling curtain: close off your wardrobe made to measure
To close off a wardrobe under a sloped ceiling, a rectangular curtain works if you can install a straight, horizontal rod in front of the storage. The fabric hangs vertically, without following the slope of the roof. Confirm the position and the fixings, then measure according to the heading you choose. Kurtens makes your curtain to measure, including under 150 cm high, to order directly in the configurator.
A sloped ceiling curtain to hide a wardrobe or storage space
Want to hide shelves, close off a hanging rail or dress a cupboard in the attic? A curtain covers the storage without leaving room for a swinging door.
The deciding factor is where the rod goes. For this solution, it must be straight and horizontal. The rectangular curtain then hangs vertically in front of the furniture.
In an attic room, there are 2 configurations to tell apart:
- The slope comes down behind the storage. A horizontal rod in front of it may work, provided you have the fixing points you need.
- The slope cuts across the front of the storage. A horizontal rod placed below the lowest point will not cover the area above it. You either accept this limit or rethink the layout before ordering.
Made to measure adjusts the width and height of the curtain to the area actually covered. It does not fix a rod position that does not suit the opening.
Where to fix the rod under a sloped ceiling?
Start by marking a horizontal line in front of the storage. Check the space available for the pole, the brackets and the top of the curtain.
Fixing to a vertical wall, between 2 walls or to the ceiling may be possible, depending on the configuration. A sloped ceiling does not require a sloped pole. If the brackets have to be fixed to the slope, choose a model explicitly designed for that orientation and able to hold the pole horizontal.
Before buying anything, check with the rod supplier or the installer:
- that the brackets suit where they will go;
- the fixings suited to the material and the load;
- the permitted span and the intermediate brackets needed;
- the space taken up by the folds in front of the shelves and handles.
Plan for the opening too. On a standard pole, an intermediate bracket stops the eyelets from passing from one side to the other. The way the panels are split must therefore take its position into account.
Kurtens sells the curtain, without rod, track or brackets. No fixing at the bottom of the curtain is supplied. Kurtens does not install; we can put you in touch with an independent installer for a specific need.
How to measure your sloped ceiling curtain?
First confirm the hanging system and its final position. The dimensions of the furniture alone are not enough to order.
1. Measure the width to cover
Measure horizontally the area the curtain will need to hide. Note separately the usable length of the pole, the position of the brackets and the space where the fabric will stack when open.
The flat width of the fabric and the width covered by a gathered curtain are different. Fullness depends on the heading and the look you want. Do not automatically add a single percentage to every curtain.
Before confirming, check whether the size requested is the finished width of the panel or the width to cover. For several panels, have the width of each one specified.
2. Measure the height vertically
Measure on the left, in the centre and on the right, from the same horizontal reference down to the bottom level you want. These readings show up an uneven floor. Do not measure along the slope: the curtain will hang vertically.
How this measurement becomes the making-up height depends on the heading:
- Eyelets: the fabric rises above the pole. This extra height must be included in the calculation.
- Pencil pleat tape: the position of the hooks and rings sets the position of the top of the curtain.
- Rod pocket: the pole passes through the sewn pocket; its dimensions must be compatible with it.
Use the instructions for the Kurtens heading you choose. Do not carry over an allowance in figures intended for another curtain.
3. Choose the drop according to use
In front of a wardrobe you open every day, plan a curtain hem that does not rub on the floor. Have the finished height set from your readings and the clearance you want.

Which fabric for a wardrobe under a sloped ceiling?
Choose first according to what you expect from the curtain: decoration, hiding the storage or meeting a technical need.
| Kurtens fabric | Characteristics | For which project? |
|---|---|---|
| Linen-look light-filtering | 265 g/m² | Dressing the storage with a linen-look textile finish, without aiming for blackout. |
| Single-layer blackout | 315 g/m² | Visually closing off the wardrobe with a blackout fabric. |
| 3-in-1 thermal and soundproof blackout | 620 g/m², 3 layers | A project combining blackout with thermal or acoustic needs, to be specified according to the installation. |
Light-filtering fabric lets some light through. If your priority is to hide what is in the cupboard, choose a blackout.
With the 3-in-1, the fabric is 100% blackout. This does not mean a whole installation blocks all light: the gaps around the curtain still matter. Likewise, closing off a hanging rail with a thermal fabric is not enough to deal with the heat in a bedroom.
For that need, read our article on heat in an attic bedroom.
Order your Kurtens sloped ceiling curtain
Your project is ready once you have defined the area to cover, the hanging system, the dimensions of each panel and the fabric.
Kurtens offers 3 headings: 40 mm eyelets, pencil pleat tape and rod pocket. Choose a heading compatible with your hardware and your daily use.
The configurator accepts any size up to 1,000 cm wide and 270 cm high, or up to 270 cm wide and 600 cm high. The largest widths and heights cannot be combined. A curtain under 150 cm high can also be ordered in the configurator. It charges the smallest standard size that covers your measurement, and the workshop receives the exact size. Beyond these limits, contact customer service.
Prices start at €42 for the light-filtering fabric and €89 for the 3-in-1. The cost of your project depends on the dimensions and options chosen. Budget separately for the hanging system and any installer's work.
See our guide to made-to-measure curtain prices, then choose the fabric suited to your storage.

FAQ: curtain and rod under a sloped ceiling
How do you hang a curtain on a slope?
For the solution presented here, install a straight, horizontal rod in front of the storage, with brackets suited to the surface they are fixed to. Then hang a rectangular curtain measured for that position. If the pole has to follow the slope of the roof, have another system assessed before ordering.
Should curtains touch the floor?
No. In front of a wardrobe, a curtain that does not rub on the floor is easier to handle. The drop depends on use, the floor and the effect you want. Measure in several places to allow for unevenness.
What are the different types of curtain fixings?
There is a difference between the brackets that hold the rod to the building and the curtain heading that attaches it to the hanging system. Kurtens offers 40 mm eyelets, pencil pleat tape or a rod pocket. The rod, brackets and compatible accessories are bought separately.
What is the thing that holds a curtain called?
The hanging system is usually a rod or a track, held by brackets. The curtain attaches to it with its heading and, depending on the system, with rings, hooks or gliders.
What is the current trend in curtains?
For your sloped-ceiling space, you can choose a linen look and a shade close to the wall for a discreet result, or a contrasting colour to highlight the storage. Above all, choose a fabric whose opacity suits your use.
How do you stop a curtain sliding on a sloped rod?
A sloped pole can pull the fabric towards its lower end. A retaining device must be assessed with the supplier of the hanging system, taking into account the opening you want. For the rectangular curtain described in this article, plan for a horizontal pole.
Can you order a sloped ceiling curtain under 150 cm?
Yes. Kurtens also makes curtains under 150 cm high, to order directly in the configurator. Enter your exact dimensions and the heading you want: the workshop makes the curtain to your measurement.
Does this solution suit a roof window?
A sloping roof window calls for a different assessment from a wardrobe front. See our guide to curtains for roof windows. Kurtens supplies no fixing at the bottom of the curtain.
