Made-to-measure blackout curtains for nurseries and children's bedrooms

For a nursery or a child's bedroom, Kurtens designs and makes two ranges of made-to-measure curtains: the single-layer, fine and fluid, for blackout only, the more accessible range, and the 3-in-1, also thermal and acoustic, the more complete range. Both fabrics are 100 % blackout, even in light colours. To limit light coming in at the sides and top, allow enough coverage around the window.

Order your curtain to the dimensions of your window

Select your range and colour in the grid, then enter your dimensions in the configurator. The configurator accepts up to 1,000 cm wide by 270 cm high, or up to 600 cm high by 270 cm wide, including a height under 150 cm. For a size outside these limits, contact us.

Before ordering, read the size guide to work out the right dimensions for your opening and your planned fitting. Made to measure lets you cover your window while allowing for light passing around the curtain.

Choose from 4 top heading finishes: 40 mm eyelets, pencil pleat tape, rod pocket or multi-purpose. The heading guide helps you choose according to your setup. No bottom fixing is supplied. The pole, track and brackets are for you to buy and install: Kurtens does not sell them and does not install.

The Exact-Fit guarantee, available as an option, covers a remake in case of a measuring error within 30 days. For a question about dimensions or headings, contact us before confirming your order.

Blackout curtains: how do you limit light at the sides?

To make the room dark at naptime or in the evening, choose a blackout fabric. A sheer curtain filters light but does not stop it. Both ranges in this collection are 100 % blackout: the choice between them depends on the room's other needs.

An opaque fabric alone does not guarantee darkness in the whole room. Light can get around the curtain at the sides or the top when coverage is insufficient. The dimensions and position of the curtain therefore matter as much as its fabric.

Plan coverage suited to the whole opening, with the overlaps your fitting requires. Read our explanations on the 100 % blackout curtain and total darkness, then the solutions when light comes in at the sides.

Which blackout curtain should you choose for a nursery?

Is your need only about light, or also about street noise and a cold or exposed window? Choose the range according to the functions you are looking for.

  • Single-layer blackout, the more accessible range: 315 g/m², a single layer that is 100 % blackout and UV-resistant. Its mottled technical linen is fine, fluid and reversible, with identical front and back. It meets the need for blackout, with no thermal or acoustic function.
  • 3-in-1 thermal and acoustic blackout, the more complete range: 620 g/m² and 3 layers combining blackout, thermal function and noise reduction.

For the 3-in-1 curtain, Kurtens states up to 7 °C, measured in the laboratory. This is not a guaranteed temperature in the bedroom. Sound attenuation reaches up to 22 dB as stated by the brand: this stated maximum is not a guaranteed noise reduction in your room.

Both figures apply to the 3-in-1 only. To learn more about a cold window, read our article on the nursery in winter.

Soft colours: does a light curtain stay 100 % blackout?

You can choose a light shade without giving up blackout. A Kurtens blackout curtain stays 100 % blackout whatever its colour. Darkness in the room also depends on how well the window is covered and on light passing around the fabric.

The 3-in-1 comes in 14 colours, including powder pink, beige, light grey, off-white, lavender mauve and mint green. Beige and off-white make for a restrained palette; powder pink, lavender or mint add colour. Match your curtain to the walls or to a textile already in the room.

The single-layer comes in 6 colours, including pink, yellow, blue and mottled grey, with a mottled technical linen look. Choose the range first according to the functions you want, then the shade according to your decor.

Measuring and fitting a nursery curtain, with or without drilling

To set the dimensions to order, start from your window and the planned fitting. Do not rely only on the glass dimensions: the curtain must cover the opening and limit light coming in around its edges.

  • Decide on the area to cover and the position of your pole or track.
  • Follow the size guide to take the width and height you need.
  • Check that the chosen heading suits your setup in the heading guide.

Fitting without drilling is possible with a compatible system suited to your window and the weight of the chosen curtain. Read our guide to hanging a curtain without drilling before buying your brackets.

The curtain hangs at the top on a pole or track that you choose and install. Kurtens supplies the curtain with the heading ordered, without pole, track or bracket.

Caring for your blackout curtain

Before washing your nursery curtain, check the care instructions for the chosen model. The single-layer and the 3-in-1 are built differently: do not assume that the same wash programme suits both.

Read our care and washing guide for technical curtains to prepare the cleaning. If you are unsure about an instruction, contact Kurtens stating your model before washing it.

Your questions on choosing the right curtain for a nursery

Frequently asked questions.

Is a single-layer blackout curtain enough for a nursery?

To block light, choose the 100 % blackout Kurtens single-layer, the more accessible range. If you also want thermal and acoustic functions, choose the 3-in-1. In both cases, allow enough coverage at the sides and top.

Blackout or sheer curtain for a nursery?

Choose blackout to make the room dark. The Kurtens linen-effect light-filtering curtain, the most accessible range, filters light without blacking out: it suits daytime or works alongside a blackout curtain.

Does a light-coloured curtain block light as well as a dark one?

Yes. Both Kurtens blackout ranges stay 100 % blackout whatever their colour. You can choose a 3-in-1 in beige, off-white or powder pink. Also check for light passing around the curtain.

Which curtain is best against street noise?

The 3-in-1 is the Kurtens range with an acoustic function, with up to 22 dB of attenuation as stated by the brand. This maximum does not guarantee the same reduction in your bedroom. The single-layer has no acoustic function.

Which curtain should you choose for a cold or exposed window?

Choose the 3-in-1 for its thermal function. Kurtens states up to 7 °C, measured in the laboratory: this is not a guaranteed temperature in the bedroom. The single-layer has no thermal function.

What sizes can you order for a nursery?

The Kurtens configurator accepts up to 1,000 cm wide by 270 cm high, or up to 600 cm high by 270 cm wide. A height under 150 cm can also be ordered in the configurator: you pay for the smallest size in the grid that covers your measurements, and the workshop receives your exact measurements. Read the size guide to include the coverage needed around the window.

Why does light get through a 100 % blackout curtain?

Light can get around the fabric at the sides and top if the curtain does not cover the opening enough. Check its dimensions and position. Made to measure lets you adapt the coverage to your window.

Can you hang a Kurtens curtain without drilling?

Yes, with a fitting system compatible with your window and the weight of the chosen model. Read our guide to fitting without drilling. The curtain's headings are at the top; Kurtens does not supply a pole, track or bracket and does not install.

How do you wash a Kurtens blackout curtain?

Check the instructions for the chosen model and read our care guide for technical curtains before washing. If you are unsure about the programme or drying, contact Kurtens stating your model.

What does Kurtens offer in case of a measuring error?

The Exact-Fit guarantee, available as an option, covers a remake in case of a measuring error within 30 days. Before ordering, use the size guide or contact us to check the dimensions to enter.
