Many households install two superimposed curtains: a blackout curtain to block light, and a thermal curtain to insulate against the cold. This configuration poses three problems. It costs more. It clutters the window and complicates handling. And above all, air circulates between the two layers, which reduces the overall thermal efficiency.
A thermal blackout curtain integrates both functions into a single multi-layered fabric. The internal layers block 100% of light, while the mass and density of the fabric (620 g/m² at Kurtens) create a barrier against heat loss in winter and overheating in summer. The result: a single rod, a single curtain, two real performances.
This type of curtain is particularly suitable for bedrooms (total darkness for sleep, stable night temperature), rooms exposed to cold (north-facing facade, single glazing, bay window), and homes without shutters where insulation relies entirely on the curtain.
| Solution | Concealment | Heat gain | Sound attenuation | Number of curtain rods |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blackout curtain only (coated) | 80-95% | 1 to 2°C | 3 to 5 dB | 1 |
| Thermal curtain lining only | 30–50% | 3 to 5°C | 5 to 10 dB | 1 |
| Blackout + thermal curtains layered | 80-95% | 3 to 5°C | 8 to 12 dB | 2 |
| Thermal blackout curtain 620 gsm | 100%* | Up to 7°C* | 22 dB | 1 |

Kurtens Thermal Blackout Curtain Performance.
The Kurtens curtain is not a blackout curtain with an added thermal lining. It is a fabric designed from the outset to combine three performances in a single 620 gsm multilayer fabric.
Blackout: 100% of light blocked, regardless of the fabric color. A cream beige curtain blocks as much light as an anthracite grey curtain. Blackout depends on the fabric structure, not its shade. This means zero stray light, even in the middle of summer facing direct sunlight or street lighting at night.
Thermal insulation: up to 7°C gain between the window and the inside of the room*. The curtain acts as a barrier between the cold surface of the window (in winter) or hot surface (in summer) and the living space. In practice, the room stays warmer in winter without increasing heating, and cooler in summer without air conditioning.
Soundproofing: 22 dB of sound attenuation*. This is not the main focus of this page, but it is a real advantage. 22 dB is the difference between a clearly audible busy street and barely noticeable background noise. To delve deeper into this topic, consult our custom soundproof curtain collection.

Custom-made: exact dimensions for maximum efficiency.
A thermal blackout curtain loses much of its effectiveness if it is incorrectly sized. Too short, it lets light and cold in from the bottom. Too narrow, air circulates around the sides and thermal insulation drops. Standard sizes never exactly match your window.
The Kurtens configurator allows you to order a curtain to the exact dimensions of your window, down to the centimeter. Free width, height up to 270 cm (the limit of the fabric roll). For the most common windows, 4 standard sizes are also available: 100x150, 150x230, 250x230 and 300x270 cm.
7 colors are available: grey, off-white, cream beige, mint green, green, lilac and blue. All offer exactly the same blackout and insulation performance. The choice is purely aesthetic. To help you, consult our color guide.
Three types of finishes are available: eyelets, gathering tape and rod pocket. The curtain weighs 620 g/m², which requires a sturdy wall-mounted curtain rod. Telescopic rods are not recommended for large windows. Our fastening guide details the advantages of each system.
How to choose your custom thermal blackout curtain.
The first step is to measure your window. Measure the total width of the area to be covered (not just the glass, but the entire frame, with a 15 to 20 cm overlap on each side to eliminate light leakage). Measure the height from the top of the curtain rod to the floor. For a detailed guide with diagrams, please consult our size guide.
Next, choose your finish based on your curtain rod and desired look. Eyelets provide an even drape with wide pleats. The header tape creates fine, elegant pleats, suitable for track rods. The rod pocket slides directly onto the bar, with no additional accessories.
Select your color from the 7 available options. All colors offer the same performance. In a bedroom, soft hues (cream beige, blue, mint green) create a soothing atmosphere. In a living room, gray or green integrate easily with most decors.
Place your order via the online configurator. The curtain is custom-made and delivered free of charge within 2 to 3 weeks in metropolitan France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Luxembourg. The optional Exact-Fit guarantee (€29.90) covers measurement errors: Kurtens will remake your curtain to the correct dimensions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a blackout curtain and a thermal blackout curtain?
A classic blackout curtain blocks out light but does not insulate against cold or heat. A thermal blackout curtain like Kurtens combines 100% blackout with thermal insulation that can achieve up to 7°C of gain*, thanks to a multi-layered fabric of 620 g/m². That's two functions in one curtain, without layering or double curtain rods.
Does the Kurtens thermal blackout curtain also insulate against noise?
https://kurtens.com/collections/rideau-phonique-sur-mesureYes. In addition to total blackout and thermal insulation, the Kurtens curtain reduces noise by 22 dB*. It offers triple performance in one curtain: blackout, thermal, and soundproof. To learn more about sound insulation, consult our custom soundproof curtain collection.
What dimensions are available for the custom thermal blackout curtain?
You can order custom sizes using our online configurator (maximum height: 270 cm). 4 standard sizes are also available: 100x150, 150x230, 250x230 and 300x270 cm. Consult our size guide to measure correctly.
Is a made-to-measure thermal blackout curtain effective in both summer and winter?
Yes. In winter, the dense fabric retains internal heat and blocks cold radiation from the window (up to 7°C gain*). In summer, it prevents external heat and direct sunlight from warming the room, thanks to 100% blackout that also blocks solar radiation. The curtain acts as a two-way thermal barrier.
What type of curtain rod for a 620 gsm thermal blackout curtain?
The Kurtens curtain weighs 620 g/m², which is significantly heavier than a standard curtain (150 to 300 g/m²). It requires a sturdy wall-mounted rod, secured with appropriate wall plugs (concrete, plasterboard, brick). Telescopic rods are not recommended for large windows as they may sag under the weight. Consult our fixings guide to choose the right system.
What happens if I get my measurements wrong?
The Exact-Fit guarantee (€29.90) covers measurement errors. If the dimensions don't match, Kurtens will remake your curtain to the correct size. To minimize risks, measure according to the steps in our size guide before placing your order.
What is the delivery time?
Allow 5 to 7 days for manufacturing and 5 to 10 days for shipping. Each custom curtain is made to your exact dimensions. Delivery is free in mainland France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Luxembourg. The Exact-Fit guarantee (€29.90) covers measurement errors.
