Many households hang two curtains on top of each other: a blackout curtain to block the light, and a thermal curtain to insulate against the cold. This setup creates three problems. It costs more. The performance of the Kurtens thermal blackout curtain.
The Kurtens curtain is not a blackout curtain with a thermal lining added on. It is a fabric designed from the start to combine three performances in a single multi-layer cloth of 620 g/m².
Blackout: 100% of the light blocked, whatever the color of the fabric. A cream curtain blocks as much as an anthracite grey curtain. Blackout depends on the structure of the fabric, not its shade. That means zero stray light, even in midsummer facing direct sun or a streetlight at night.
Thermal insulation: up to 7°C of gain between the glass and the inside of the room*. The curtain acts as a barrier between the cold surface of the window (in winter) or the hot one (in summer) and the living space. In practice, the room stays warmer in winter without turning up the heating, and cooler in summer without air conditioning.
Acoustic insulation: 22 dB of sound reduction*. This is not the main focus of this page, but it is a real benefit. 22 dB is the difference between a busy street that is clearly audible and background noise you can barely hear. A thermal blackout curtain loses much of its efficiency if it is poorly sized. Too short, and it lets light and cold through at the bottom. Too narrow, and air circulates around the sides, so thermal insulation drops. Standard sizes never match your window exactly.

The first step is to measure your window. Take the total width of the area to cover (not just the glass, but the whole frame, with 15 to 20 cm of overhang on each side to eliminate light leaks). Then choose your heading based on your rod and the look you want. Eyelets give an even drape with wide folds. The pencil pleat creates fine, elegant folds, suited to track rods. The rod pocket slides directly onto the bar, with no extra accessory.

What type of rod for a 620 g/m² thermal blackout curtain?
The Kurtens curtain weighs 620 g/m², which is significantly heavier than a standard curtain (150 to 300 g/m²). It needs a sturdy wall-mounted rod, fixed with anchors suited to the wall (concrete, plasterboard, brick). Telescopic rods are not recommended for wide windows, as they may sag under the weight.
