The patio door: your home's thermal and acoustic weak point.
A patio door 240 cm wide and 220 cm high covers more than 5 m² of glazed surface. Glass conducts cold and heat far faster than a wall. In winter, this surface radiates cold throughout the room, creates downward drafts along the glazing and forces the heating to compensate constantly.
In summer, the effect reverses. A south- or west-facing patio door captures direct solar radiation for several hours. The room temperature can rise by 5 to 10°C in a few hours, turning the living room into a greenhouse. Venetian blinds and sheer curtains are not enough: they filter visible light but let a large part of the thermal radiation through.
Acoustically, the glazed surface transmits far more noise than a wall. Road traffic, building work, lawnmowers, neighbours' voices: everything passes through the patio door with an intensity that small windows do not have, simply because the surface is larger.
The curtain creates a dense textile barrier across this entire surface. It acts on all three problems at once: cold, heat and noise.

Patio doors come in dimensions that match no off-the-shelf curtain. A patio door can be 200, 240, 280 or 300 cm wide, with heights from 200 to 260 cm. Ready-made curtains usually stop at 140 cm wide. Buying two panels creates a central gap that lets light, cold and noise through.
The curtain also has to extend 15 to 20 cm beyond the patio door on each side and reach the floor. If the fabric does not cover the whole surface, cold and noise get around the curtain at the sides and bottom. So for a 240 cm patio door, you need a curtain around 280 cm wide: impossible to find in a standard size.
The Kurtens configurator lets you order to the exact dimensions. Standard sizes go up to 300x270 cm, which covers the most common patio doors. Beyond that, made-to-measure takes over. The maximum height is 270 cm, enough for standard full-height patio doors. For dimensions and the measuring method, see our size guide. For extra-wide curtains, also see our made-to-measure wide-width curtain collection.
Compatible with sliding patio doors and French doors.
The curtain does not attach to the patio door. It hangs from an independent wall-mounted rod, installed above the patio door frame. The curtain falls in front of the patio door, and the patio door slides normally behind the curtain.
To open the patio door: push the curtain to one side (it glides along the rod), then slide the patio door as usual. The movement is simple and quick. Eyelets are the recommended heading for sliding patio doors: the curtain glides with very little friction. Pencil pleat also works well for a more elegant drape. See our heading guide.
For fixed (non-sliding) patio doors, the principle is the same: a wall-mounted rod in front, with the curtain falling in front of the glass. No mechanism constraints to worry about.
A dense technical curtain (up to 620 g/m²) weighs more than a decorative curtain. For a 300 cm patio door, expect around 5 kg. Plan for a sturdy wall-mounted rod with intermediate brackets every 100 to 120 cm. Telescopic rods are not recommended at these dimensions.
The 3-in-1 curtain for your patio door.
Our 3-in-1 curtain combines three functions in a single multilayer fabric of 620 g/m².
Thermal insulation: up to 7°C gained between the surface of the patio door and the inside of the room*. In winter, the room stays warmer without turning up the heating. In summer, the curtain blocks solar radiation and prevents overheating. To learn more about thermal insulation, see our made-to-measure thermal curtain collection.
100% blackout: zero stray light, whatever the colour of the curtain. Useful for watching television without reflections, for video projection, or simply for sleeping in a living space turned into a spare bedroom. To find out more, see our made-to-measure blackout curtain collection.
Soundproofing: 22 dB of noise reduction*. On a large patio door, the reduction is particularly noticeable because the treated surface is large. Traffic, garden and neighbourhood noise are significantly reduced. See our made-to-measure soundproof curtain collection.
7 colors are available: grey, off-white, cream, mint green, green, lilac and blue. For a living room, the neutral shades (grey, cream, off-white) fit easily into most decor. See our color guide.

Frequently asked questions.
Does a patio door curtain get in the way of opening the sliding door?
No. The curtain hangs from an independent wall-mounted rod, in front of the door. The sliding door moves normally behind the curtain. To open it, push the curtain to the side (it glides along the rod), then slide the door open. The eyelets make it glide easily.
What curtain size for a 240 cm patio door?
For a 240 cm door, add 30 to 40 cm of overhang (15 to 20 cm on each side). You need a curtain about 270 to 280 cm wide. The standard 300x270 cm size works, or order made-to-measure to the exact dimensions. See our size guide.
Does the curtain really insulate a large patio door from the cold?
Yes. Our 3-in-1 curtain creates an insulating air gap between the cold surface of the door and the inside of the room (up to 7°C gain*). The larger the glazed surface, the greater the heat loss without a curtain, and so the more noticeable the curtain's effect. It is on large doors that the difference is felt the most.
Can you hang a curtain in front of a fixed patio door?
Yes, the principle is the same: a wall-mounted rod fixed above the door, with the curtain falling in front of the glass. With no sliding mechanism to work around, installation is even simpler. The curtain can stay closed permanently or be opened during the day, as you prefer.
Do you need one or two panels for a patio door?
A single wide panel offers good insulation (no gap in the centre), but it is heavier to handle. Two panels that meet in the centre are more practical if you open the door often. In that case, allow for a 20 cm overlap in the centre to avoid gaps. For more details, see our wide-width made-to-measure curtain collection.
Does the curtain protect against summer heat on a south-facing patio door?
Yes. 100% blackout blocks direct sunlight, which prevents the greenhouse effect inside the room. Combined with the thermal insulation of our 3-in-1 curtain, the curtain keeps the room cooler without air conditioning. It is on south- and west-facing doors that the impact is strongest in summer.
